Speech Eval | Autism PDD

How were they? When my dd got evaluated she scored the bottom 2 percentile overall language, with the absolute bottom 1 percentile for receptive language. It was a hard day.

Keep in mind that those standardized tests cannot possible truly capture each child's true capabilities. They are just snapshots of that particular moment, an artifical moment for that matter. They are useful for comparison and placement and overall assessment - for better or worse - but they don't tell the whole story. They may be necessary but they are not necessarily accurate. Even my dd's speech therapist and neurologist agree with me on that.

I don't know if that helps or not but the most important thing is not where they start (the evaluation) but where they end up (with help in speech therapy). I'm sure your ds will do well with speech, especially as he is high functioning. My dd has amazed me (and her ST) with her learning ability and the progress she's made.

I know both of mine do not test well.  And the st even told me that with some things they knew my kids knew them but when they tested them, they didn't do so well.  And early intervention, along with repetitive training is the key.  I know I am still amazed to this day with the progress Jeffrey has made.  All I do is look back at his very first IEP and I can see the amount of progress he has made.  So hang in there.

I am a little discouraged today as I got my boys Standardized scores from his slp. How does one get those types of evaluations?!  It seems all they ever do with Luke is assess where he is developmentally (e.g., last time he was 12 mo expressive, 16 mo receptive), but he's never been put into a percentile or anything like that.

I'm sorry that you were disappointed by your son's scores, AM1346.   It's never easy hearing something negative about our little sweeties.  Then again, as Tammy said, often our ASD kids don't test well and while it's nice to get a general idea of where our kids are through standardized means, our kids are anything BUT 'standard' and standardized testing is one of the worst ways to evaluate children on the spectrum.

I hope you're feeling better soon.

I think they test them when they are 3, or they did with mine.  Then they tested both of mine again when they were 5.  I know both of mine still go thru the yearly speech eval thru the school.
