Many kids are diagnosed with autistic disorder and pdd-nos at fairly young ages. Seems like the many of kids get dx'd around ages 2 - 3, and often the parent's concern about lack of language is the driver that starts the whole process that leads to dx. However, it is not uncommon for kids with Asperger's Syndrome to not be dx'd until they are school age (5 - 6 - 7). With AS kids, because they often have language on time and are very smart, quirkiness is often written off as related to being gifted and the real social defecits and perseverative interests don't become clear until they are in a school setting. These of course are broad generalizations based on what I've seen / read. All kids are different.at 21 mos! I guess my dd was showing VERY obvious signs and now we also get a LOT of hand flapping.. so, no there was no misdiagnosis. My ds was dx'd at 19 months....Zach was dx'd at 2.10,he was quite obvious though,I brought in a video of him stimming and pacing to the Dr the day before his appointment.
Good luck.

My son was dx'd at 2 !/2 with PDD-NOS, but I knew at 7 mos that he had issues.
He qualified for services through Regional Center at 7 mos for gross motor delays, speech. At that point, he still had a head lag, he was like a sack of flour because he did not use his own muscles to support his weight, had major sensory issues.
Kane was dx at 2 and a halfSarah was 2.8 years but the signs were always there...just very subtle. My son was diagnosed at age 4. Docs are getting better about diagnosing earlier - but certainly not all of them! It really, really depends on the doctor. Your best bet is to ask around - especially to other parents in support group - as to who the best doctor is to see. If we hadn't done that - we would not have a diagnosis right now as the doc we were originally scheduled to see doesn't "believe" in AS or high-functioning autism or PDD-NOS. The doc we saw told me his colleagues would never have diagnosed my ds just because of his joint attention skills (which are pretty good). And his ability to read faces and tone of voice would not have helped him get a diagnosis either. But, he clearly has some symptoms and some have gotten better in the last two years and we have seen others appear as well. Other symptoms (like perseveration) come and go. My ds didn't perseverate for almost a year and then when we started talking about moving - the perseverations started again. They definitly seem to be related to anxiety. They faded this summer again, but ramped up again once school started. They seem to be calming some - until some new experience is thrown at him.
Anyway, ask around to make sure you get a doc who is EDUCATED about autism (because trust me, not all dev peds are!) and who is willing to look at diagnosing kids at an early age so that they can get the help they need. Good luck to you!
Officially at 27 months, but before that at 24 months a SLP had told us that he probably had autism...
