Natural lighting - no flourescents.
Ditto on the others.
Fluid classrooms - with downtime space that's not set up like a "time-out" room.
All text and work sheets in bold larger print with double spacing
Basic visual cues and labed items.
Very organized teacher, nurturing yet in control
Amen to the sensory Gem, low teacher ration , and cafeteria
If you could open up a school for your child what would you want?
I'll start. 1. 15 students or less in a classroom.
2. Sensory integration gym.3. A cafeteria that served wholesome, organic foods and catered to any particular dietary requirements of the students.definately more sensory integration activities
way more parental advice, and education about community resources ect.
programs for not only your childs weak areas but also building their strenghs , for instance my son is reading ready!!! but the only thing the teacher could offer in this area was teaching my son how to read other childrens names and things around the classroom. I would like to see maybe an advanced class for him where he could spend a few hours a week on this.
music music music!!!!!!
A specific Social Skills class everyday filled with fun/ games/ sensory/ music/ art/ dance... and educated teachers that know how to teach our kids to engage each other:) I agree with all of these. I know social skills is major for us, too. I like the idea of teaching a skill but then practicing it with help in a real setting. Otherwise, there is no transfer. Also, I'd like typical peers around so we could go in and out of mainstream.
Dedicated and educated teachers and staff who love their job.

I'm trying to get a group of parents together in my area and talk about starting a charter school. A major task but can you imagine if a school like some of the suggestions existed. A mom can dream, right?
Dedicated and educated teachers and staff who love their job.
Wholist approach to teaching - head, heart, and body.
Education that takes place in the school and the community
Peer mentoring program.
A place where all children will have their needs met, with or without a dx.
All of the above posts.
Ditto to no flourescent lighting! Daniel would say oral spelling tests, sciencelabs,Healthy foods, math centers, dance classes. No mean kids either.
I would love to see schools that fit the kids needs in public education. We lived in Mckinney,Tx and the charter school was closed cause it cost more and many other parent's who's kids didn't attend there disliked it cause it was different.
I think education should have to fit all kids needs. I also wish uniforms since mornings are crazy also. I pray the world will change in the future!
