I would never use meds on preschool age kids if it were me. I just herd on the radio that fish oil has been proven better than prozac in a university study.
Adam has been on Abilify for about 2 years. He was on it for impulse control (he was hitting his brothers), but my doc also told me it would bring him more into our world compared to not being aware. It made a big difference for him, he is much more talkative and happy.
I think 3 is pretty young to try meds though. My doctor wouldn't have put Adam on any meds at 3.
I agree with everyone else.....
Risperdal is for aggesive behaviors and from what I have read, it is not recommended for anyone under the age of 3....
I'd be asking this doc a lot of questions....and if I didn't like the answers....I'd be walking !
Thanks for all the replies. I'm not against meds, my older daughter could not cope at all at school without Prozac. I'm just leery of using such powerful drugs on a tiny little girl!

I hadn't heard of either drug being used without there being a behavioral issue.

Me neither! It sounds way, way off to be suggesting meds like these for a 3 year old w/o behavioral issues. You should definitely go to a different doctor.
My 8 year old son has been on Abilify for over a year. He was on Risperdol and it caused him to have wetting accidents during the daytime, in school (he is prone to problems in that area anyway, but mostly at night). He is on the Abilify for impulse control and basically to "draw him out". He was stimming a lot before he started on it - mostly spinning in circles and eye blinking. That has stopped. When he first started I did notice a difference in him, he talked to me more and spontaneously shared things with me, hugged me, which did not happen before that nearly as much. He still does these things, we just are not as aware of tha change now, since we are used to it. He did not have big behavioral problems in school but would do things like sit on his 4 month old baby sister or bend her finger backwards.Kayla's developmental pediatricain was concerned about her lack of progress in communication and socialization. He suggested Risperdal or Abilify.
Kayla has NO behavioral issues. She's a very sweet kid, even though she is in her own world. And she's THREE.
I hadn't heard of either drug being used without there being a behavioral issue.
Has anyone used either drug solely for communication and socialization improvement? Any success?
These are powerful drugs and I'm not sure I want to try them on my kid just yet. We've just started ABA and I'm hoping there will some improvement there. (right now Kayla HATES ABA!)
