This topic on our forum has an article about the Burkhart Center for Autism (in Lubbock). They're gathering info for a database of autism services in Texas. While this might not help you now, you could share any information you have based on your experiences.
And through this topic on our forum, you can find the local ASA chapter and support groups, who might be able to answer your question in case you don't get an adequate answer here on the forum:
My daughter is 5 years old (almost 6), diagnosed with Austism 2 years ago. She was attended a local private school for pre-k (Pre-K3 and Pre-K4) at a "mainstream" school. Unfortunately she didn't get accepted to this school for Kindergarten. So we had found a private school that specialized in the spectrum for this year, she is in Kindergarten. She received 30 minutes of speech therapy twice a week.
Unfortunately, an incident at that school has forced us to pull her out of the school (not due to behavior of my daughter, KK, but what happened left us not feeling comfortable with the school). So of course, we are mid year, in a bind, but felt we had no choice as we weren't confident of my daughter's physical safety.
So we are going a bit crazy trying to figure out what to do. My wife is home schooling until we can find a place for KK. We have some appointments at a few schools (Monarch, Joy, and BriarWood). We haven't been on the tour yet so we don't know how these schools will fit our daughter's needs.
She is high functioning, smart girl, but does need extra attention and benefits from a smaller class size (her current class size is 1 teacher + 1 asst for 8 students). Does anybody out there have any recommendations on schools in Houston?? We may consider public school as well if the program is good and we can use it. I am not even all that familiar with the IEP process and I fear we'll be fighting a battle. We are in HISD and the elementary school she would go to would be West University Elementary. I've heard good things about this particular school, but don't know anything as it relates to teaching children with Autism.
Any help, recommendations out there would be most helpful. Our daughter is currently not in school and would like her to be back in as soon possible but don't want to stick her anywhere b/c I'm sure all this school switching is not easy on her. Thanks so much in advance.
