Daily Communication Journal | Autism PDD

The daily log is getting me no where --- very general and really does not tell me anything.  When I asked for the teacher and therapists to actually let me know what is going on.  The OT wrote back illegibly --- scribble can not read it --- should I politely ask her to print so I can read her writing. 

Do you have a general check list?  ANy ideas for getting useful information out of the journals?  It took me two weeks to find out he did not have a one to one.  It took me three and a half to find out he is isolated in class.  It is a mild to moderate special day class. ---- Teacher is making him work with his untrained aide ---

Eeeekk ... I hate to say this but I am having a similar problem. Any suggestions?

 

We've had a variety of approaches.  This year, we just write back and forth in the journal and it is pretty good.

Last year we had this matrix with 3 columns.  The columns headings were Activity, Amount of Support, Comments.

The activities for a given day varied, but common activities we'd see were:  circle time, centers, speech, OT, learning center, reading, librarty, assembly, art project, etc.  For each activity they would note the amount of support required as either minmal, moderate or maximum and then there would be a comment such as "needed many prompts from aide to complete center activity" or "great job creating art project independently without prompts."  There was also a box on the bottom for general comments.  This worked pretty well.

We used a blank notebook, but it was just too time-consuming for the teachers to fill out.  I got much better information chatting in person, but this isn't possible for everyone.  In fact it's harder for me this year, since my son is now independently going to his classroom in the morning, which is awesome!
