Hyperactivity | Autism PDD

for about 3 months now Grant has become hyperactive and is easily set off and goes on a rampage.... is this adhd in combination with autism?

A friend reccommended Behavior Balance????

My boys have hyperactive moments, times when they will go totally out of control. I was told by a doctor that it was not ADHD because it was not constant, if it was ADHD it would be more constant. I don't know if that's everyone elses experience, but that is what I was told.

Many children on autistic spectrum also have ADHD.  Given the behavior of my son and having a daughter who is ADHD, more than likely he'll wind up with a dual diagnosis of both.

There is currently some discussion in research circles that ADHD is actually on the extremely high-functioning end of the autistic spectrum.

My son has been dx's with both but ive also read that they dont go hand in hand so im not sure. I however think that yes it could be.

There are certainly many cases of ADD/ADHD combined with autism, and many cases where it just looks like it.

In my son's case, it just looks like ADD/ADHD.  His inability to sit at the dinner table can look like "hyperactivity" but it's because it's socially and sensorily overstimulating.  In periods of stress, he can do a lot of stimming -- running around making high-pitched noises.  Apparent trouble concentrating is actually trouble with receptive language.

Here are some screening tests for ADHD that might help you make the relevant observations you need for an evaluation, if you decide to go that route:

Good luck with everything.

According to my son;s develop ped.  adhd and autism are linked ,but sometimes autism traits are mistaken for adhd which is a separate dx. my son is hyper sometimes but he does not have adhd at all.

Thanks for your responses!  Grant is always active LOL  It's like he is plugged in for energy!

I guess only tiem will tell.... it is hard work but I am glad he is active and playful. He is the first to bed every night and the first one to rise each morning... He is happy and loves entertaining his brothers, he gets so frsutrated when they won't play with him, I think he exhausts themHeh, if you ask me all boys when they are kids have ADHD, hehehe.

Indeed, I was very hyper, never could sit still, and was quite the miss fit in school, or class, i got into trouble alot, years after being mainstreamed.

I found it difficult to pay attention quite a bit, but am not sure if it was HFA or just being a kid with energy and wanting to be outside.

I always thought I had more energy then most kids, and could go on forever, running, biking, not sleeping much, playing sports, hiking, climbing ect...

It is only recently at the age of 25 do I realize how much I lack that energy these days, heck I dont even sleep well anymore (tho improving due to sleeping medication and a more stable sleep routine). Indeed, I am not as in shape as I once was in years past, probably the result of driving versus biking and age.

I think an abnormal kid would be one who does not have alot of energy and is very quiet in class.
