Our 6yo ASD son Brandon has had sleeping problems for about a year, slowly but steadily getting worse the last 6 months or so. He's always been agreeable to bedtime, but would lay awake and make noise for an hour or two, and would regularly get up (often multiple times) in the middle of the night. Which means his 2yo brother (typical) would be up, we would be up, etc. It would be a whole process to get everyone back to bed (sometimes with discipline involved) and we would all suffer for it the next day.
After doing lots of research on this forum, other places online, and talking to our son's chiropractor, we decided to try Melatonin about 2 weeks ago. We're giving Brandon about 1mg/night, 30 minutes or so before bed. It certainly seems to make him tired quickly, but the wakings haven't diminished much... maybe a little, but he's still busting into our room at least once per night. Seems really tired many mornings, and last night he completely wet the bed (which he's NEVER done). Maybe related to the "vivid dreams" aspect of Melatonin, who knows.
Anyone else have similar experiences or advice to share? We're wondering if we should continue with the Melatonin, cut the dosage back, or what. I know it can take a little dosage modifying, but just looking for some tips from someone who's been there. Thanks in advance!
