Thank You for this information, I am seriously thinking of homeschooling my 12 year old Asperger son, who is not functioning well at his new Middle School. The stress is becoming to much for him. I never thought of online schooling before I saw your post. Can you tell me more about it and how do you go about doing this at home? Any advise is welcome. Thanks
Loki - there are a variety of online schools out there - some with teachers you can access in the process and some similar to Time4Learning.
I use Time4Learning for my 11-year old daughter (who is Aspergers) as a homeschooling resource combined with unit studies offline, and for my 2nd grader as a reinforcement for her schoolwork. It's a great program, particularly when I combine it with the offline/written work as well. Both my older children are homeschooled (high school and 6th grader), and I'll eventually put my other two in the mix as well. We set aside a certain time every day that's computer time, then take a break, and then work on their offline. I work full-time, so they get their computer work done with supervision while I'm at work, and then we do the other together.
You can find a TON of homeschooling resources out there, for both NT and special needs children. About.com has some great links, as do several others.
When my child started Time4Learning’s homeschool program, he was at a kindergarten level for reading and a second grade level for the rest of the subjects. He has came a long way and can now read at a second grade level and is completing math, social studies, and science work at a 3rd grade level. The online learning goes on for him at home, where no one yells at him or makes him feel left out because he didn't get the a attention he needed to stay focused form a teacher that has 35 kids. Time4Learning works so well for children with special needs who need a different education!
just ran across this article about an Aspergers high student who did well taking live online classes. He was physically located at a special school, but his classes were through an online service, allowing live contact with the online instructor. This was in the UK, but I thought I'd pass it along since it touches on your topic. http://www.careandhealth.com/Pages/Story.aspx?EntityID=aeb56 e25-693a-43a1-9ad8-d525adcd4f6b
