Moving to Northwest Indiana | Autism PDD

Share

I have a friend who is moving to the NW Indiana area, her husband will be working for Mittal steel. She has 5 children, the oldest is 8 and has severe autism. Just wondering if anyone has any advice on schools in that area that I can pass along to her.

The town of Munster has a good special ed reputation.  My ds is in Westlake which is the Lake Central School Corporation's Special Ed co-op.  The towns that encompass Westlake are Dyer, IN, Schererville and St. John.  DS is dx'd AS/mood disorder and I have been pleased so far with his education (7th grade).

Have her check out http://www.maapservices.org/.  Mary Ann Neiner is a Board Member who'll probably answer the phone and lives in Munster and can give help as far as recommendations or Sue Moreno who started maap can also give her direction.

Note these are all public schools.   A certain local Catholic school is the area wouldn't even take an AS boy last year cuz they knew he'd get the services he needed through the public school system.

Thank you so much for those suggestions, I will pass them along to her. That is wonderful to have some names of people in the know.

I hope some members from Indiana see your question, but if you don't get an adequate response here, you can look up the local ASA chapter or support group and ask them.  You can locate them and other local services/experts through the free search services I've gathered under this topic on our forum:

Good luck to your friend.  I hope the move goes smoothly for her family.
