Welcome to the board. Good luck and I hope everything goes very smoothly for you and your child.
Good Luck!!

I wanted to introduce myself after reading all of the posts over the last few weeks. I came here initially because the school suggested my son be taken off an IEP and put on a 504 plan, this was only 4 days into the the first year of middle school. I was adamant that I could not let that happen and after reading here puchased From Emotions To Advocacy (Thank you Tzoya!) The good news is I attended a conference along with the SpEd teacher and 2 RegEd teachers and I don't think I'll have to plead my case at all, they were pretty blown away by what they learned and how much it correlated to what I had been telling them. I really need to thank all of you because I have learned alot from reading your posts and reading about all of your wonderful children.
I'm glad that I found this forum and I hope to continue learning from all of you.
Welcome to the Board, looking forward to hearing more good news about your son! Kim I'm sorry to hear the transition has been difficult. Reading comprehension is a common problem for kids on the spectrum, probably especially if it's tested with questions where they have to draw inferences (vs. factual questions). I hope the private testing gives you the answers you're looking for. Thank you all for the warm welcome. Unfortunately, the transition to middle school isn't going all that well. His anxiety level is extremely high. He has always been able to hold it together during school hours but when he comes home it is a different story. That has always been my struggle with getting services for him. He's not a behavior problem for the school so he is a "fall through the cracks" kind of kid. I had been very fortunate at his elementary school where they were very understanding and believed me when I told them that his behavior at home was quite different than it was at school. Towards the end of last school year they began to see some aggression at school. He is fully included in general ed and according to the school, is meeting or exceeding grade level expectations in all areas. I don't agree with that and we are currently having private testing done with a psychologist that deals with kids on the spectrum. I am positive his reading comprehension is not good. For example, he had to answer questions on a short story that told of a man who was skiing on a mountain and was caught in an avalanche and waiting to be rescued. The first question was "What do you know about the narrator?" and he answered that he must like mountains and avalanches. When I asked him if he knew what an avalanche was he explained it correctly and then I asked him if he thought someone would actually like avalanches and he replied that this guy must have because it was all he talked about
Anyway, I could go on and on about him because he is just so amazing. I think the beginning of this school year has been, in many ways, like getting the dx all over again. I guess because of the issues with puberty and the realization that even though he has made unbelievable and amazing progress since he was dx with autism at 2y 10mo, there is still a ton of work to do and time is moving quickly.
Fantastic news! Don't we have some sharp members here?
I'm glad to
