Insurance Parity Laws for Private Insuran | Autism PDD

Share

Does anyone know which state or states passed a parity law for autism benefits forcing PRIVATE insurance companies to pay benefits.  I know a few states have passed parity laws, including Illinois, but those don't include private insurance.

I'm sure I read on this site about at least one state that passed the law for private insurance companies.

Any help appreciated.

BTW - I'm searching for some of this stuff to share with the politicians at our meeting.  See my post about Special Ed Advocacy meeting.

Hi Mama.  Here in PA such a bill passed the House, but not the Senate (yet).  The gov here is insisting on additional $$ for CHIP and has also pushed the autism bill thus far.

Ryan's Law in South Carolina passed.  Here's a thread with some details:

Thanks yepper!

Alot of them are like our parity law in Illinois.  It doesn't cover private insurance. I work for the City of Chicago which is privately insured and does not cover anything autism related. So, although the parity law passed in Illinois, it doesn't affect us.

thanks for the info.....the search continues!

Yepper - PA was the one I'm looking for - they're specifically going after private insurance companies.

Mama...here is the bill.

Not sure if this will work...but I have no link for it:

You can help autistic Pennsylvanians and their families

In July, the state House of Representatives unanimously passed H.B. 1150, which would provide insurance coverage to Pennsylvanians with autism.  The bill is in a Senate committee awaiting action.

In the meantime, a study is being conducted to determine the cost and benefits associated with H.B.1150. Your input is vital to this process. If you are a concerned parent, family member or know someone who is, here's what you can do:

File a letter no later than Oct. 3 that:

  • briefly states the need for insurance coverage;
  • succinctly details your struggle with delays in diagnosis because of a lack of coverage, the financial or emotional cost, or the inaccessibility to services or  physicians because of a lack of coverage;
  • includes attachments pertaining to rejection of coverage for medical, intervention and support services; and
  • shares your perspective on the wider impact and consequences of insurers' refusal to include autism spectrum disorders in your medical coverage.

Letters should be filed in writing to: The Health-Care Cost Containment Council, Attn: Ms. Flossie Wolf, Suite 400, 225 Market Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101.  Please file six copies with the Council and send a copy to Senator Donald White, Chairman, Banking and Insurance Committee, 281 Main Capitol, Harrisburg, PA 17120, and also to Sandy Williams, Office of House Speaker Dennis O'Brien, 139 Main Capitol, Harrisburg, PA, 17120.

Please take full advantage of this opportunity to inform the Council of the enormous burden and cost being placed upon families. We owe it to every autistic Pennsylvanian.

I believe IN has a private insurance law that states something to the effect that autism must be covered like any other medical diagnosis is covered. I'm not in that state, so I don't know the details. Didn't Texas do something similar?Oh my gosh, I never knew this bill was being talked about (I also live in PA).
I'm going to write ASAP (tomorrow!). Thank you for bringing this to the
board's attention!!
