A few drops of tea-tree oil (melaleuca oi) in the bath is also good for helping prevent yeast infections recurring- it has anti fungal properties. Liz
For immediate pain relief you can apply a thin layer of vaseline. It helps soothe and keeps the urine from touching her itching (now burning) bottom.
Does sound like yeast to me. Try a 14 day course of diflucan if you can.
There is an anti-fungal cream you can use as well, once she is healed up a bit. Lotrimin. WalMart has thier brand of it for about half price.
Oh! don;t forget to check for pinworms. Can you take her to a walk in evening clinic? It sounds very much like yeast to me and going through that all night, poor baby. I agree about feeding her yogurt if she will eat it. There is a particular one that has an additional live culture in it (if I remember right) and that is the best choice. I would go get the 7 day monistat and rub on there until you can get her to a dr or ask a 24 hour nurse hot line if it would be ok to put that on a 4 year old. THen I would find a dr that can find out why she is having so many yeast infections at age 4. Has she been tested for diabetes? I get a lot of those and that is one of the things they tested me for.Poor little baby! How miserable for her and for you! My sister went through that with my niece. It was constant. I think that they ended up using some cream on her, I forget which one. My sister eventually found a doc that knew what to do and did it. My niece was really young at the time. I imagine that scratching at it makes things more difficult to clear up. She may be scratching at night in her sleep, as well. Oh, I just ache for her!
I just got a thought,... are her nails clipped short so that she doesn't re-infect herself with whatever is making her so miserable? You won't be able to make her stop scratching 100%, but if her nails are kept short, you can minimize the opportunity for tearing open her skin and re-infection. Wow, really bad. If it gets worse emergency room? I had a cousin who had one so bad she went to the emergency room. I've been told eating yogurt can help prevent yeast infection and cranberry juice helps with bladder infections. I would get some meds for her.
I know an adult who refers to yeast infections as "The Hairbrush Syndrome."
TERRIBLE ITCHING!
You might call your peds nurse and ask if it is okay to use over the counter monistat on it?
HELP!!!! Ali has complained of itching in her bottom and sometimes her butt for prob. a year. She has had 2 yeast infections in the past. The last time the doctor said she looked fine and did not have a urinary tract infection and though she did not think it was yeast she gave her Nystatin anyway. Well, the last week she has been itching like crazy and scratching herself raw. She complains that her bottom hurts and that even her underwear against it hurts terribly. I called the dr. and they have NO appts for tonight and that the dr. would call me back and maybe could prescribe something. She never called so I called to see if they have any openings for tomorrow and they said they have same day sick and will only book those times come 9am tomorrow. But Ali is crying in pain and trying to hold off on going to the bathroom (has only gone twice in about 30 hours). I am at work and get out of here soon but I do not know what to do. Should I wait and see if she can get into the dr's tomorrow? She will not let my mom (who is watching her) even look at her bottom to see if it is worse than it was. Sorry if my wording offends anyone...that is the words we use though. The poor thing itches and hurts so bad and I just do not know how to help her and her doctor does not seem to care.
Try giving her some acidophilus. I give three times a day to Leah. It will keep down yeast infections. It is what you find in yogurt but you can get chewable supplements or powder and add in things.
)Well, the Dr. called back at 7:30 (after I had left work and stupid me gave the work #) and said she can call in the yeast medicine....I am calling her back today. I did have some Nystatin (sp) left from last time that is still in code and got 3 applications on her. She was still having a lot of trouble though and for some reason after eating 2 sugary foods (fruit snacks once and ice cream another time) she starting going nuts with itching. The outer irritation looks better but she is having a lot of pain on the inside, she says. It is funny someone mentions diabetes. She does love her sweets and diabetes runs in the family. Unfortunately, as far as the yogurt, the food she loved as an infant she now hates anything that texture. As far as her nails as someone mentioned, she is a nail picker and they never get longer than barely making it to the end of the skin on her finger.
Thank you all for your input and well wishes! I hate seeing Ali so in pain and frustrated. She also looks extra tired and has a low grade fever. She was crying last night trying to go to sleep and asked me "what helps it?" Poor thing!
DANG everyone else said what I would say, especially pinworms! I have thankfully never had a problem with pinworms with my kids but my friend has & I heard her horror stories. I have had to check my son for them (GROSS) with a flashlight before but as it turned out he was scratching & picking at his bottom because of constipation which he gets frequently, even with lots of fiber & Miralax in his daily diet. Hang in there! There is a theory going around that children with autism naturally produce more yeast than others. So that means that they are prone to yeast infections, vaginal and in the stomach (part of the whole leaky gut thing) There is a diet that you can put her on if this becomes a chronic problem. (Yeah I know lets limit there diet even more!) One of the things to stay away from is sugar.Yeast thrives on sugar, that is why she itched more -- it increased the enzymes that irritated her skin and tissues.
Hope the nystatin is helping!
Poor girl. Maybe it is pin worms. They itch more when you have to go to the bathroom I think. Good luck.
