soap obsession | Autism PDD

My son has recently taken a new obssesion with bars of soap.  Not sure why...my guess is the scent or maybe the smoothness of it.  He doesn't do anything with them, he just holds a bar of soap in each hand, just about everywhere we go.  He doesn't put it in his mouth or put his hands in his mouth after holding it, he just kind of holds one in each hand.  He actually has a collection going. My family members and I consider it " good clean fun."

With other obsessions, such as phones, we started a collection for him of various office type phones, cordless, and cheap corded phones.  We never bought any, but asked those we knew if they had phones that didn't work, if they could give them to DS.  We used his obsession to our advantage, and try to teach him conversation skills.  We in fact have so many phones, that he is no longer OCD-like for every phone he comes across. It is as if the challange is gone, so he is no longer obssessive.

Now that he has started this soap phase, we are using it to our advantage again.  we use it to encourage good hygene, we buy colored soap to practice our colors, we count the bars of soap, etc.

I was just curious if anyone else has gone through this.

I wish my T liked soap.  That is really neat how you turn the situation in a good learning one. The phones are really cute idea. J- has 20 my little ponies. A lot of our kids collect stuff.

I seem to remember that Rory Hoy had this obsession.  He's an autistic teen in the UK.  He made a video where he tells what it's like to have autism and even uses humor.  Here's the link to his youtube video:

Bella Online also has a review of the DVD-book package here, with more background on Rory:

I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did.  Good luck with the new special interest.
