Thank you everyone for your input. I really appreciate it. It's just so difficult to say. what the cause is... Everyone's story is so different and then again, they are all so similar. I think when it comes down to vaccinations, its a case of "your damned if you do, and damned if you don't." On one hand you know that the vaccine can save your child's life, but at what cost. My opinion wavers from time to time. I am just so terrified to even begin vaccines on Max, but also very concerned about him coming into contact with any disesases that could be prevented with a vaccine. Sometimes I just throw my hands in the air and say it is what God wanted.. Thanks againI have stated this several times. Payne was vaccinated before we got his formal dx. I think that he is genetically proned to autism and that the vaccines overwhelmed his immune system to the point of meltdown. I think we are slowly pulling him out of the cloud though. I don't think either in our case, though genetics probably are involved somehow. Whatever 'triggered' it - if there is an environmental trigger - happened in utero.
My oldest had all his - though definately not on the current schedule! He was up to date when needed for school though and he has ADD (with some aspie traits) Our 4 year old had all of his - he was dx'd at 3 years 8 months with pdd-nos and is quite high functioning. Our baby was 9 months old when brother was dx'd and we didn't do any more shots after that. He has a speech disorder and sensory integration disorder and some asd flags. He is however light years ahead of his brother and I think although he may be pdd-nos he will be ok and catch up. He is in therapy regardless of how mild we do many hours of aba etc.
I am so interested to hear if anyones non vaccinated kids have autism. I know some do so I don't think it's "the cause" Also, I struggle with skipping vaccines, I know they save lives as well! I am so scared to have them done now, I can't bring myself to do it.
My son was vaccinated but waited until 17 months to have his MMR shot and he started showing signs of PDD at a much younger age, I think 10 months was the first signs I noticed. My ds received all vaccinations. I remember the first time I really thoughtBoth my boys were vaccinated, 1 is ASD and 1 is NT. Both boys developed the same way until 18 months when R (NT) started to talk and C (ASD) did not. We expressed our concerns to our pedi at the 2 year checkup, the same checkup where he got the MMR. We saw no change, positive or negative, following the MMR.
My personal opinion is that autism is a genetically based condition that can be influenced by environmental factors. Even though there have been no studies that show a direct correlation between vaccines and autism, my personal opinion is that vaccines may be the environmental factor that triggers full blown autism in some children that are already genetically predisposed to it, perhaps children whose immune systems are already compromised in some way. I do not believe that vaccines are the cause for autism in all children. Many folks on this board have stated that their children showed signs from birth.
Anyway, this is all just my own personal theory. I think that over time it will be clearer, at least I hope so. If I were to have another child, I would definitely separate the MMR and give them separately. Why? Because even though there is no proven tie between vaccines and autism, there is alot of anecdotal evidence, and there is absolutely no downside to splitting up the vaccinations (other than perhaps some incremental costs).
