I am so glad this question/comment was just posted. I am totally confused after son had his psych appointment. For the last few months she has been tossing around the dx of High Functioning Autism. This week when I asked her what actually is his dx - she says Asperger's. I told her from my understanding because his language was so delayed (58% at 3 yrs old) and still is more with articulation now that I was under the impression he fell under the autism end. She claims that autism has mental r e t a r d a t i o n - which I never knew. Maybe on the lower end it might, but on the higher end. Can someone clarify this for me?? OK....I am trying to notify the admin. There was a troll in the forum for people dx with asd that used the word to insult someone. I think that is why it is blocked out. I do agree there is no shame in the word re*ation and it needs to be restored.I completely agree with your post. I would like for the site to quite destroying the word R E T A R D E D, though. There is NO shame in being mentally &nbs p; r e t a r d e d. YOU are not implying there is. It's the fact that this Board AUTOMATICALLY changes the word that does. I find the change offensive. If an individual has a cognitive disability, the official diagnosis is mental r e t a r d a t i o n. We don't post A**ism or Cerebral P*lsy, do we? So why are we supposed to post mentally re*ed? This is offensive to me. Administrator -- PLEASE change this!
Autism and Mental re*ation are two different things.
What is the difference between Autism and Mental re*ation?
Most people with mental re*ation show relatively even skill development, while individuals with autism typically show uneven skill development with deficits in certain areas - most frequently in their ability to communicate and relate to others - and distinct skills in other areas.
It is important to distinguish autism from mental re*ation or other disorders since diagnostic confusion may result in referral to inappropriate and ineffective treatment techniques.
