OK -- Thanks for the explanation. I've been trying to check it out.
I bet the filter is for the word "re*" (not "re*ed" or "re*ation") and it's not set to only use it when it's all there is to the word. It's the same reason we're getting "assumptions" turning up with splats in it.

I can say that MR is not used at all in Australia and I would be looked at as being very UN-PC if I were to use that term. We use ID here. That goes for the average Joe and professionals. I personally think all this PC stuff goes too far.
Australia is pretty bad for it, we recently changed the name of the famous fairy penguin here because it might offend gays! I mean it's been called that before gays were referred to as fairies and frankly I doubt any gay person in their right mind would care... Also on Australian Play school they now sing "bah bah rainbow sheep, have you any wool"
What does ID stand for? The OFFICIAL diagnosis in the US for those who have cognitive impairments is Mentally re*ed. That is the medical and educational term. Usually, people refer to it as MR since, in the past, families WERE ashamed and the term brings with it vestiges of that era. However, I believe we can change that and make using the official term for MR no different than using the word autism if we USE those words with respect. AFter all, it's the BAD use of the word r e t a r d a t i o n that has caused it to have a poor connotation, so if we USE it properly, the connotation will go back to simply meaning not the average amount of intellectual ability, which is a fact with some kids, nothing to be ashamed of.Intellectual Disability is the official term in AUS for IQ under 70 I agree there is no shame at all in the MR term, but I was told in no uncertain terms when I mentioned MR shortly after Sharlets dx that the term was inappropriate and only used in the US (all my early research was out of US so I picked up the term)
I fully agree that we all ought to use the term that is used in our society. MR is the term used here, as you discovered. If ID is the term in Australia, definitely use it. How would you feel, though, if you saw In*******ual Disability appear every time you posted it? There is no shame in having ID/MR, as you agree. But I think seeing the term hidden implies that there IS.
Is the phrase "mentally re*ed" being changed automatically on this board?
OMG! My son does not have A**ism. To use that euphemism would imply that it is somehow shameful to have Autism.
The same with MR. The word R E T A R D E D brings with it NO shame, but using the euphemism re*ed implies that there IS shame.
Please, whoever did this, change it back. For those who think that &n bsp; Mental R e t a r d a t i o n is not a PC phrase since it's been used negatively too much over the years, please use the new phrase "cognitively impaired." Otherwise, the implication is that there is something shameful about having MR.
hmmm.... well... I know many in my family are bringht, my father is a nuclear engineer who actually was 1 of many who were sent to 3 mile island in 1979 to fix their problems. Others do stuff like teach physics or work on air craft for the military.Autistic children are born most often to very bright couples.
Research ¡°Asberger Syndrome¡±. I have not read much recently, but the kids are so engrossed in learning and thinking, even as very young children, that they may stop listening and responding. Sort of like a chess computer program not responding while it researches the perfect move. As it goes over millions of possibilities the computer is unaware of time.
Well these children need to be watched carefully when young, and engaged in games and efforts to talk so they don¡¯t just think. Some of the best research centers are located near large universities and computer companies, because the nerdy types who may work there in the past never met anyone who would marry them. Now they work, meet and sometimes marry. Their children are more likely to be autistic, but it can be managed and their minds engaged so they are bright, even genius level intelligences, but somewhat socially handicapped adults.
Some kids are slow. Give them time at home. Teach them with love, patience and humor. What could be more important than your own child.
I have a nephew that asked me if he was re*ed in the 8th grade. He wasn¡¯t, just lazy. He¡¯s now a gifted musician, computer programmer and database analyst.
At the school, there are probably more programs for the re*ed than for autistic kids. But there is a huge difference. One is very slow, the other is thinking so fast he can¡¯t hardly stop to communicate. Don¡¯t just love him. Talk to him. teach him, even if he does not seem to respond much. Play him classical music.
