Newly diagnosed | Autism PDD

Hi, my name is Lisa I'm a single parent & my only child was recently diagnosed w PPD-nos. Ivan just turned 2. He's a delightful little boy & very social. I still can't get over the shock. my friends & family keep telling me to buy Jenny McCarthy's book because her son has autism. Its hard to explain PDD-nos to others when I barely understand it. I have a 2nd cousin w severe autism so everyone compares my son to my cousin. He's had ABA for 2wks now. Progress is slow. He can sing & count but cant tell me what he wants, its sooooo frustrating. Early intervention told me he didn't meet their criteria for services but is getting services just because of the diagnosis. If he's not that far delayed why isn't he making more progress???Should I change ABA providers???Welcome Lisa.
My son gets ABA and has been in an ABA program since he was 2.5yrs. While
he has made great progress, we knew going in that it would be a lengthy
process. CAn I ask how many hours of ABA you are getting a week? With an
ABA prgram, usually the first couple of sessions are used to get to know the
child, identify behaviors, identify reinforcers, getting the child used to
having demands placed upon them, working on compliance. I think 2 weeks
is a very short time to see if the provider is not effective.(Unless you have
some knowledge of ABA) I would look at specific programs they are working
on and look at the data to see how your child is doing on that oprgram. You
should be able to ask the BCBA about specific questions that you may have
with your childs programs.he's getting 12 hrs, 20 is recommended but I'm not sure the providers can give me 20 until december. The girls who come are very young & seem kind of inexperienced

First of all, hi and welcome to the board!

IMO, it's unrealistic to expect to see a lot of progress after only 2 weeks of ABA.  As KathyK pointed out, it's a long term commitment.

My yountest son's primary issue is a language delay.  I have his speech language pathologist test his language every 6 months.  For me, this is how I measure the success of his VB/ABA program.  I have to say, it's by far the best thing we've done for our son.  However, progress takes time.

I also wanted to add that our line therapists are all college students who never did therapy before working with my son.  They were trained by our senior therapist, who is a BCBA.  Also, our senior comes to our home a couple times a week to check up on things, answer questions, and work on programs.

I would give things more time.  If you're uncertain about things, ask questions.  If your heart tells you the fit isn't good, then explore your other options.

Good luck!

The behaviorist can only come 2xmonth with this companyWe originally started with 25 hours and now we are at 35-40 hours a
week. My son is almost 6 and part of the time, his therapists are his
shadows in kindergarten. We have also tracked his progress with a ST
and a neuropsyche eval. I think the gold standard is 25hrs+ a week. I
personally prefer the Verbal Behavior/ABA for my son as he does have
some language and speech delays. We are on our 2nd agency. Our first
agency was great at the beginning but last fall we really needed more
advanced and individual programming so we made a switch to another
agency. It was the best move that we could have made. If you have
concerns, talk to parents in your area who do ABA and have been doing it
for a while. Check to see if your programmers and therapists are
recommended. In many areas good ABA agencies have very long wait
lists, Good Luck. ABA was a big adjustment for us and a big lifestyle
change. It however workd for my son and I do not regret it.
