Speech Therapy | Autism PDD

Years.

J has been getting speech therapy for about a month now.  I know he will not just start talking "over night" or anything like that.

But I was just trying to get an idea of how long it took for you to see any "results" from your child's speech therapy.

I still have not heard J say any words at all.  I'll probably be so freaked out when he does say something! LOL

True, that progress is gradual, though it depends on the child as to when you will first start seeing results.  My son was not nonverbal, but we saw an explosion of language within the first three months.  Beyond that, the fine tuning part has been years.  We are 8 years into it, and we are still working on subtle issues surrounding pragmatics and conversational give and take.
YEARS and YEARS!!!  But it is coming!!!Definitely takes a long time ... and it is progressive.  Nicky has been getting speech since about 18 months of age!  Baby steps. My son started speech at 19 months....He was over 3 years old when he had his language explosion.

My 2yr old son w PDD-Nos has been getting speech for about 1 yr. He counts to 10, sings some of "old macdonald" & twinkle twinkle, 10 small words like more, done. That's all. How long does it take to see progrss from ABA? How do you know if you picked the right people?

I will be so pleased when I hear a "Momma, Dadda, more, or done".  Surely that won't take years!!!  That's all I'm looking for right now-- just to hear A WORD or two.  Don't take this as bragging, please, that's not what I'm trying to do, but my 17 mo. old (NT) has a huge vocabulary of over 75 words and will atleast attempt to say whatever we tell her to say!

It almost makes me feel teary eyed to think that J's mother has never heard him say "momma".  That is the greatest thing in the world to hear your baby call your name-- and I want J to be able to do that!!!  And HE WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it took MY son years. And he does not suffer from mental re*ation in addition to autism (just so you know).  Of course, some kids learn language faster. Mine learned math faster.  All our kids are individuals first, ASD kids second.

The QUICKEST way to get a nonverbal ASD child to learn to communicate effectively is to use his VISUAL sense.  PECS is the best system for this. I'd suggest searching PECS on this board.  There are probably about a hundred excellent posts on it.  The point of PECS is to get a child to understand what communication is all about. THAT's language. Parroting words is not language. And I've found that many nonverbal ASD kids learn words LONG before they learn what words are used for.  Teaching COMMUNICATION is far more beneficial and may actually result in your child using the words you mention FASTER if he learns them VISUALLY first.

Welcome to the world of autism where the concept of "patience" takes on a whole new dimension!
