I have no words of wisdom  ((((Rita))))

Could it be the high-ptiched sound from the security system?

Grocery stores do not have those ...

hmmm.. .. will make of note of that tho Linda, I haven't heard any scanning devices or barcoding devices go off....

I have to resolve this bec soon it will be winter and there is nothing really I can do but take her to places thar are ENCLOSED!!! And stores becomes a big part - I want to take her to a petstore and resturants and... she is so out of control when she enters ANY store.

2 days ago I was in CHildren's place.... oh my god, I wasnted to cry - everyine was so apalled at her behavior and yeah yeah she has a disability and I shouldn't be bothered abt what ppl say but the thing is if this behavior continues, she will face exclusion EVERYHWRE.

Ok so this is weird and very aggravating not to mention embarrassing - did I forget sad???

My daughter does absolutely great in food stores where she sees shopping carts right upfront and then she is totally ok.. the smell, lighting, people, noise- nothing bothers her.

But the min I take her to ANY OTHER STORE - be it a CVS, Marshals, Petco, Macy's..home dept.. she starts howling an dyelling and has a major meltdown.. Today someone actually stopped and asked me if 'everything was ok'... bec she was having one of those BADDDDD meltdowsn (I was at GNC to look for Coromega!!).

what should I do?? I can't take her anyway.. she wasn't like this. Also, these days restaurants are a big No-No...!! please advise.. I am at my wits end.

thanks you so so much.

PS: she is 2 yrs old.

Grocery stores have carts, not all other stores do.  I don't know if she walks, is carried, or goes in a stroller in other stores, but maybe she prefers to ride in a cart.  Just a guess.

It might be familiarity, too, if you go to a grocery store a lot more frequently than you do other shopping.

Good luck with everything.

Maybe she sees the purpose of a grocery store. You get things she likes to eat. The other places may be an inconvience. My son went through phases. Right now, I can't take him in a store b/c you can see the door no matter where you go. To my son, if you see the door it's time to go! I think if you lay off the other stores for a long while, you can reintroduce them. That usually worked for me. Besides, it's a nice excuse to leave them home and get out by yourself-but it's not always the easiest. Hugs to you!

What happens if you go to a non-grocery store that has a cart?  Have you tried that, just to see what happens, even if you don't need anything there?

I know that Bed, Bath and Beyond has carts, and Kohls has a cart/stroller combination.  Best Buy and those kinds of places also have carts.  I feel like you need to do some experimenting to pin down what exactly she likes about the grocery store and doesn't like about other kinds of stores.  Maybe go out for a few runs where this is your sole purpose for going.

OK, don't kill me for this one, can you try some desensitization for 1 particular store?  Pick someplace and start going there every day even if it's for 5 minutes.  Try brining a favorite toy or comfort item from home?

No answers, just throwing out ideas...
