question about drooling... | Autism PDD

Share

Hey emerald,

Billy was on zyprexa and drooled, But not due to the zyprexa. He drooled before starting zyprexa. He is on no meds right now and will not swallow his spit at all. My other boys also have drooled. Chris still does sometimes. If you are very worried, talk to the doctor. But, for my boys it was not medication that causewd drooling. Sorry I can't be of more help. Hang in there!

Well over the last few weeks, I noticed that he is drooling a lot.  He will be talking and drool just comes out while he is talking...sometimes when he is just sitting around watching TV or playing he is drooling.

Is this something I should worry about?  I was starting to wonder if it might be med related, but with him doing so much mouthing of objects, is it just related to that?  Is he mouthing things because it helps with the drooling?  What would cause this to just all of a sudden come on?  That's why I thought it might be med related...seems to have started around the time he went on zyprexa in June, but just recently is becoming a constant thing.

Thanks guys!

I'm not familiar w/ zyprexa, but I know my mom has taken meds that
made her mouth severely dry...and now a new one that nearly causes her
to drool. He could be mouthing things for sensory reasons...or yes, to
hep with the drool. Our dd drools all the time, but I think hers is due to
muscle tone & lip closure etc. Read the long printout on zyprexa & see if
it's in there. If the med is helping, not sure if there's anything to do
about the drool--perhaps give him a small washcloth to carry with him?
Has he gotten his 6 year molars yet? I hear those are quite painful, and
perhaps he's unable to express this to you, so he's mouthing things?

If you have noticed any changes in her speech, though, defenitely contact
your neuro. Or, of course, call the doc if you are concerned about this.

Keep us posted.

Hey Niki,
My ds is drooling and mouthing terribly from the Topamax med.  It sounds like a med thing and there isn't much you can do.  Perhaps he could wear a sweatband on his wrist and use it to either chew or wipe the drool with.  I know that will be a lot of sweatbands.  My ds who is 2 is wearing a terry cloth star around his neck and it has really helped him. We started it for two reasons to try to wean the binky habit and for the drooling.  He was going through 5-6 shirts a day and now 1 or 2.
Good luck.  I would put a call into the neuro just to check it out.
