communication breakthroughs! | Autism PDD

In one week we had multiple communication breakthroughs

When I gave him the video and he watched it the first time he got all excited when he saw himself and said "I jumped in the TV!"  No one could recall him ever hearing that phrase before.

A few days ago the same friend parked outside and waited while I ran something in to their house.  He looked out the window and saw the truck (an expedition but he calls it a truck) went to the door and looked straight at me and said "want to go to the ZOO?"

Then later that evening I had him over.  I have many cats and one of them just is agressive with the other cats so he is in his own room with a screen door, and room under for paws to reach in and out so he isnt really isloated.  My grandson went into the room for toys and before I could get back there I heard him say "come on kitty you can go out" and I see the cat dash across the hallway.  Course I had to dash to capture the cat before a cat fight broke out but he certainly wasnt repeating something he heard there!

There have been a few things he has said here and there that were not just repeating what he has heard but these things seem more significant to me since it was spontaneous and appropriate for the situation.

Course his mother told me he has watched that zoo video about 50 times already which i am not sure if it is a good thing or not but....

I figured of anyone you guys here would appreciate how thrilled I am over these simple things

Oh and I also forgot there was a potty breakthrough.  The potty that is downstairs was pretty much given up on.  No luck ever on that one.  He has been doing some on the potty when he is put on (the regular toilet) but not on his own at his own will.  My daughter in law called me to tell me that she found poop AND pee in that potty and neither her or my son knew he did it.  She said it must have sat there for a few days the way it looked.  She smelled something and looked and low and behold.. (which means he did it by himself)... just wonder what in the world motivated him to do that on his own out of the blue?

that is fantastic! also,i think it is fantastic of you to take him and give the mom a few hours!  good grandma

my sons teacher also says that keith is very well behaved when he is at school.   it is a matter of knowing that he is capable and able to do, without so much help, but it is so much easier on me (cleaning up messes) if i do help.  even thou you were not in a controlled environment, he was not where he could get to things, of mass destruction.....anything, an auty can make mass destruction out of ANYTHING.  just make sure that u don't come accross as " see- he behaves for ME"  just the new environment was enough of a destraction to provide a good learning envirnment.  wonderful break thoroughs on the language. sometimes, just having the attention from a different person, is a learning experience.  and the potty!!!

he does sound much like my son, given the opportunity and someone who will listen and TRY to understand their words, they will communicate. it is very frustrating for the 24 hour caregiver, though.

thanks for being an involved grandma!

Yeah for Tommy!!!   I am sure all of those words were just music to your ears!!!!

DS likes to do the potty alone too.

Congrats to all of you!!!!!!

Aww that was sooo SWEET of YOU to take Tommy so Mom and Dad AND Tommy could have a break from each other!  Hmmm I am thinking about "testing" the waters to see if AJ will behave better for someone else OTHER than his teacher.  I think one of my hubby's friends would watch him for a spell.  I am always just sooo worried that he will be getting into everything and putting MORE on her to deal with as she has a hubby that is quadraplegic (sp)  Thanks for sharing your wonderful story!
