OT FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM - COMING SOON ON DVD
September 19, 2007
"As
a parent of a child diagnosed with Autism and Sensory Integration
Disorder, I wanted to share what I’ve learned and what has helped our
child enormously” says DVD producer Jackie Olson. “Britt Collins, our
son’s Occupational Therapist, provided us with skills and tools to
actively take part in our son’s early childhood intervention and it has
made all the difference in our lives.”
A
2007 Centers for Disease Control report found that 1 in 150 children in
America today have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many of these
children also experience Sensory Dysfunction, also known as Sensory
Integration Disorder. The goal of Occupational Therapy is to equip the
child with life skills that will be used in their every day living.
Our
DVD “OT FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM, SPECIAL NEEDS AND TYPICAL” introduces
parents to Occupational Therapy (OT) and what it can do for a child who
has difficulties with organization of behavior and/or Sensory
Dysfunction. The program is instructed by Occupational Therapist,
Britt Collins, who combines traditional OT with Applied Behavior
Analysis to teach parents and caregivers various skills which can
assist in desensitizing a child and help them on the path to
reprogramming their brain function.
The content provided
includes activities for gravitational insecurity, motor planning,
vestibular dysfunction, tactile dysfunction, oral motor skills and
more. Britt explains and demonstrates (with the help of three children
of varying degrees of development) in both clinical and easy to follow
terms.
November 30th, 2007 is the launch date for the first
of TRP Yoga Special Needs DVDs, “but you can count on many more in the
future, “says Jackie Olson. “The knowledge is there and we believe
every family should have access and be able to talk to their physicians
and intervention team about what works best for their individual
child.”
