Daydreams,
Thank you for the name. I haven't contacted a lawyer as of yet. I'm exploring all my options. Still trying to talk to the director of the ESE department. I really like the school and my child has a wonderful teacher.
Angelstill, Thank you for the suggestion of the McKay Scholarship. I would consider it if I knew of a better alternative.
You could write a letter to the Superintendent of Schools and say that you will hold the school and HIM personally responsible should your child come to any harm. Yes, some autistic kids are violent and they need an education, too, but those kids need to have intense intervention implemented IMMEDIATELY. Sometimes that means a different setting for that child -- or yours.
have you tried Mark Kamlieter and Associates. We used him but by the time we got him there was so much water under the bridge between us and the school system it was a mess. I had already filed 12 state complaints and all that did was waste alot of energy time and money. I'm homeschooling my son now. I did try the Florida Autism Center of Excellence and it was not what I had hoped for , for my child. Kind of like what you mentioned above. My son was in a regular ED class at one time, but even with scripts from doctors , they would not give him an aide. Wish I could be of more help to you.
Good Luck,
oh and Kamlieters office is in St. Pete but he travels all over Florida
What is a McKay scholarship? That might be only in your state. I have not heard of it. Please post info about it here. Thanks.McKay scholarship is only in Florida. It allows us to take our kids w/ IEP's out of their "home" school to be placed in a private / public school (if they have room) but doesn't allow for transportation, etc. They give the $ that your home school would have gotten to the new school based on your matrix code (services)
I'm having an issue with my child's self-contained autism classroom. There is a violent, disruptive child in this classroom. I will not tolerate my child being hit or hurt by this child. I've observed the classroom. They are doing the best they can to redirect & calm this child. However, they can do only so much. This is a safety and educational issue. A large amount of time is being spent calming this child.
I need an advocate or lawyer. What are my child's rights? Can I press charges? Can I demand my child be removed from this room. What if I want him in a regular ed classroom with a one on one aide?
Can someone tell me how to locate an advocate or lawyer? I've contaced our CARD UCF casework. She is out of town until next week. We live in Central FL.
I'm new to the board. I appreciate any advice offered.
Thank you!
I posted the COPAA attorneys in Fla. on your other thread about this. You could always ask for the McKay Scholarship and change schools.
