J pats his tummy now- all the time. I was just wondering if any of your kids do this also??? He does it really fast sometimes too. Who knows!!!! I was just curious if this is a common stim or not.
Putting pressure on the stomach can indicate abdominal pain that the child can't communicate. If the pain is chronic, they might not even realize that it's not something everybody feels.
The patting seems like sensory-seeking behavior (which stims are). If you don't have a good overview of your child's sensory issues, you can try this checklist:

My son has a lot of tactile stims. He's had a thing about chins and a thing about ears, but so far nothing with the stomach.
Good luck with everything.
Thanks NorwayMom!!! I just printed it out and will be looking that over soon!
You always have great things!!! You're awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, my dd does rub her belly button and sucks her thumb at the same time. She has always done this. Lately, she will be lying down next to me and she will ask me to rub her belly button so she can go to sleep she says. In her case, it is a stem and not a reaction to pain. She does sometimes push in her tummy as someone else mentioned. She seems to think this will make her feel better. She is just putting off having to go to the potty for the bowel movement. ttfn My daughter does this quite a bit but she is copying Little Einsteins (to get the rocket going). No my child does not do this. Maybe he has a tummy ache or discomfort. Well, I guess that answers my question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No one must see their child do this one!!! The reason I wondered about this is I actually have been noticing subtle things in one of my other daycare kids as well, and this is one thing that he does very often. I had questioned myself about him when he was younger ( he is 3.4 yrs. now) but nothing really stood out as much like it is with J. It's not that I don't think-- good thought though! It's just weird!!! I ask him all the time, "Why do you do that to your belly?" Most of the time he will look at me like, "what in the world are you talking about lady!" But today when I asked him he said, "I just have to do it." (in his slower, monotone voice) It's like when J does his hand clapping- he can't stop it, he doesn't even seem aware that he's doing it.
hair. He used to just touch everyones hair but now he know not to touch
his classmates hair. He will pat his own head or my hair or sometimes his
sisters hair. When he was little all I had to do to get him to sleep was put
his little hand on my hair and he was out stonecold.
My NT girls are both very belly-focused - but it is my belly. They are four
now but they still want to put a hand on my belly when they are tired. I
always thought it was the weirdest thing but then I saw another kid in
preschool do it and I guess it is pretty common.Ali often (several times a day) pushes in on her stomach, to the point it looks like it hurts and I tell her to stop. I have always wondered why she does this.
