You should request a FBA.  He needs a behavior plan. Medication or not they need to find out why this behavior is occuring. The moderator of this group Tzoya will be better at answering this than me.  12:1:1 does seem a bit large for his needs.  My son has 5 Kids in his class with 1 teacher 3 aids I think they just add another one  because all the kids have autism and need1:1 support. There is also the therapists but they come and go.

Call an IEP and put all request in writing.  I know I am not explaining this right. Tzoya should answer soon.  This is her area of expertise.  She has really helped me get what my son needs.

No state "gives out" anything on an IEP.  What your child gets is what is proven he needs. The best way to get support for an item on the IEP is to get a professional to put in writing that he NEEDS whatever it is you are asking for.  Of course, school employees put in writing what the school wants or they are soon no longer school employees. That is why it's ideal to get recommendations, on your own dime, from outside pros.  Of course, you are allowed to ask for an Independent Evaluation at public expense once for every time the school districts evaluates. Some IEEs are truly independent. Some are not so independent because even THEY don't want the District to be mad at them.  Think of it this way.  A Real Estate agent whose fee is paid by the BUYER  is going to get the buyer a better deal than if the agent is paid by the seller.

I fully endorse the recommendation that you put, in writing, a request for an FBA.  I also would get on the waiting list to take your child to a physician who is an expert in autism.  I would ask that Parent Training be included on your child's IEP, the indirect services of an autism consultant as well as making SURE your child is getting DAILY speech/language therapy in school.  Oftentimes aggression is caused by frustration and not being able to adequately communication can be VERY frustrating.  Ask anyone who's traveled in a non-English-speaking country.

Since you live in NY, go to www.nysed.gov  and search  for Part 200. This is the NYS regulation of IDEA 2004, the special education law.  Click on 200.13 and you will see ALL the special things that a child who is classified under Autism has a right to in NYS.

tzoya39343.2977083333Sharlet is on Risperdal. It can be very useful for aggression and in low doses usually has only minor side effects, the most common being weight gain which we are beginning to see in Sharlet now. How are things going now?

This is an upstate funded Advocacy Center.  If you need info about LI, I know an advocacy center there, too.

Hi all -  I am now going to the neurologist this morning because my son's 2nd week of school involved hitting, kicking throwing - hurting kids and para's...

I don't know what to do.  Are any of the children on this board on medications, they are suggesting this because of his aggressive behavior.  I am also going to demand a change in his IEP and to schedule a meeting.  I think this classroom setting is too much for him - 12:1:1 - he needs a smaller group - one on one attention.  NY does not give out a shadow para to be with him very easily and I am afraid that will not solve his problem.

how are your views on medicating a 5 year old?
