Paying for ABA | Autism PDD

Share

ABA is very expensive, but I think worth it. The notes in the back of Catherine Maurice's book "Let Me Hear Your Voice" are a great guide, once you have gotten started and get the hang of it. Another mom who had been through ABA with her child helped us set up our home program until we could get a consultant from one of the Lovaas replication sites. Also, Richard Saffran's site is very useful, all about ABA from a paren't perspective, including info on funding: http://members.tripod.com/~RSaffran/
Hope this helps. We're looking into ABA and I'm shocked at how expensive it is! I'm sure there are services available to help offset the cost, but I have no idea how to find them (although I'm sure it's also different in every state).  Since you guys are SO resourceful  I'm hoping you can help me get started with some links or suggestions.  Thanks!

I am sorry I don't have much info on paying for ABA , my son goes to a school for kids on the spectrum and recieves ABA therapy there, the school is at a State college and is part of the psychology department is overseen by a Doctor who is a professer. Our school district offered for my son to go here, they thought it woud benefit him more that regular preschool with an aide. They couldn't have been more right!! Have you tried looking into a State College? Or the committee for special education preschool?? I know all areas are different but it is worth a try , I know my son is recieving 5 hrs a day and we pay nothing we are very very FORTUNATE!!! I count my blessings everyday for the help my son recieves!!

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area of California where do you live?

Hi Heather I live in central NY in a very small town so my son travels an hour to get his ABA therapy. I would check with your school district or EI and see if they know of any schools that do ABA in the classrooms. Hope this helps.

sond39314.6991550926Wait a second now.  IF your child was dx with special needs, then the school district HAS to offer their resources!  ABA, ST, OT, etc...  I am at a loss here, myself, as this is ALL new stuff to me...I will shup now.Screech, unfortunately "free and appropriate" means different things to different school districts. They do not have to provide the cadillac, just the Chevette. Although ABA is the gold standard...it is also expensive, even for school districts and most people don't want to spend that kind of money even if it is necessary. Sometimes I think they spend more time, money and effort thinking of ways to deny services.
Thanks sond.  Somebody else just recommended that book to me.  A parent advocate, actually.  He's over 3, but the local Regional Center says that they accept kids with autism who are over 3, so I've also started that process.  I do have an ABA provider all set up, we'll be starting a program in about 3 weeks.  I'm very excited about it, too!!

There are ways to minimize the costs of ABA therapy.

Get the book http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0890796831/ref =pd_rate_dp/102-6947899-9320968?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glanc e/102-6947899-9320968  "Behavioral Intervention for Young Children with autism: A guide to parents and professionals"

Look at a local college or university for students who would volunteer in exchange for credit.  I just contacted the internship department of a local college about students being allowed to do their internship for this.  Also, if you ahve a Christian college in your area, they often have "Christian service hours" and you could get some help that way.

Talk to other sources (maybe United Way, or disability groups) about finding volunteers).

I'm homeschooling anyways, so it's not as big of a sacrifice for me as it might be for others to plan on doing some of the hours myself.

Yes, it would be nice to be able to get a highly qualified professional to come out here and teach my team of grad students and myself.  Realistically, my income forbids that, so I'm going to be creative.  We hope to get SSI for her- at which point we'll have hiring power, but since she's being homeschooled anyways...she's two and a half and as much as I would like professional help, I'm not going to allow myself to be limited by my income as much as is in my power.

sond39314.6988888889ABA centers???  I live in California, too.  I have never EVER heard of an ABA center.  I guess that will be ONE of the topics I will disguss with my support group.  AJ is turning 4 years of age tomorrow.  So now the regional center is off the hook AND  NOW the school has to kick in???  Why didn't the regional center inform me of this last year?!!!  I am sooooo sick of being an "ignorant" parent!  It is almost the same as the school district..IF you don't ask..you don't receive!  Grrrrrrrrrr *RAR* I'm SO excited that you're starting an ABA program!!  Best of luck with it and let us know how Jake does with it.  Luke's will begin next week.  Finally!
im with you screech-aba centers i dont now of any here in virginia either. i have checked into the autism schools here there are 3 and they are soooooo much. he had to go into public school for special ed.
