Echolalia Link | Autism PDD

Share

Norwaymom posted this in the middle of another thread, and I wanted to post it here again.  I have NEVER found another link that described my child so well, and the way that he speaks.

I've heard how he is so verbal from the new teachers and therapists that he is working with, but they do not realize how much of his speech is scripted and echolalia!  He comes out with these lines that seem somehow appropriate, but are lines that he has memorized and uses again and again.

This morning, the first thing he said when he woke up was "that was the best movie ever."  Now I understand that he was trying to tell me either he had a good sleep, or a great dream!

I sent this link to his teacher.

Thanks again Norwaymom.

I have to say it...reading the link made me giggle a little.  BB has scripted in the past and still does sometimes.  As I mentioned before, he used to do it A LOT more when he watched Dora and Diego.

Some of the answers and interpretations on that link were priceless more because of the fact that sometimes it is EXACTLY like learning to speak a new language then the actual content.

Thanks for the info!

I am going back to the nutty forest and up windy hill...I mean I'm going back to work now :)

camusa39343.3396759259Thank you for sharing that link!  Our 4 yr old daughter does this! WOW, great link! Thank you.

You're welcome.  The Indiana Resource Center for Autism website is full of great articles like that one -- written by experts, but pretty reader-friendly and about topics that we parents can relate to.

That's a great link!  I remember all the phrases that used to say for certain sitiuations but knew exactly where they came from...one was when nothing was going the way SHE wanted it to she would state:

"That's not right Mr. Noodle...it's backwards!' Or "It' upside down! (from Sesame street)

Her scripts now I can still see where they came from but more age appropriate..her new one is " Man! that's a bummer!!"

I am lucky that all her scripts fit the scene for the most part...we always knew the zest of her intentions!
