Specialized preschool vs. Wrap-around? | Autism PDD

wow,,, that sounds like an ulitmatum... Do what you feel is best. You know in your heart what he needs and is best. We were just really fortunate to start off with 30 hours, we actually increased to 40 hours- gotta do it all while she is young- sometimes I feel like we are in a race against time. Wraparound is a wonderful thing, go with that and then after a while take another look. Where in PA are you? Im in central- couldn't find any agency that implemented floortime- we are doing VB/ABA.

Something to keep in mind is that the level of TSS training is very different than that of a special ed teacher or OT. The quality of TSS services varies highly with the person. We have had a few excellent TSSs, a few awful TSSs, and several okay TSSs. Don’t trade the therapy professional for a TSS. But, if the preschool you are considering in a quality preschool, with trained special ed teachers, that is an altogether different question. My son started preschool at three. If I had it to do all over, and home services were still available, I would have stayed with the home services for one more year. There are lots of positives to a preschool environment, but if you are happy with what you have going, and your child is making progress, I would stick with it home services for another year.

well,  that's the only hours they can give me right now. . .and they said if he starts preschool, they'll drop him as a client, cause they really don't want him in both right now. so, it's one or the other.

I think the home program is where my son is really getting the skills he needs. We are doing a private preschool 2 days a week for 2.5 hours and we send one of his VB/ABA tutors. I personally would stick with the home program with him being so young. It probably depends on where you child is with his skills and language, but you can't beat that 1:1 unless the preschool progam is really top notch. Since he is only 3, I would agree with you that the home program would probably be better. What type of therapy is the 20 hours? Are you in Penn.?

yeah, we're in PA. . .it's TSS therapy. . .a lot of floor time, etc.  I would suggest increasing wrapround services. My daugher (3 yrs. old) received wraparound for 30 hours a week and she also attended preschool 3 days a week (15 hours week). Her TSS went to school with her and then met her at home after school to continue the day with all that needed to be done. It worked out nicely. Anna is unable to talk- so her TSS was able to tell me about her day-good and bad. Her TSS was able to implement various goals in the school setting. The social interaction has been an important component and Anna has come a long way socially. It has been a good experience. If you increased wraparound and have him attend school- you get the best of both worlds.Hey guys. . .i was wondering-  what do you have your child in, which do you prefer?  We're starting wrap-around services tomorrow-  about 20 hours a week of in-home one-on-one therapy. I love both of AJ'S therapists and think he's gonna do well with them.  But, he had his IU evaluation, and they want him to start preschool there 3 days a week.   We can't do both.   I'm thinking he should do the home therapy first, and then maybe the preschool next year when he's 4?  What do you think?
