Hi,My ds is doing well in school and we decided to try him in Beavers(scouts),my DH will be a leader so he will be with ds all the time,Have any of you tried your kids in scouting?

I was shocked to find out that it cost 0 to join, and we have to sell Popcorn!!!

Linda

Not yet but he will be. I am an eagle scout myself and plan on taking on a leadership role when Jay does join. Hopefully Zach and your DH will enjoy it.

Yes,

About 2 years ago some of the students in my class and their fathers started a Cub Scout Pack....and my son joined as well.  In our case, it did not go well as all the boys had significant disabilties and for our kiddos it needs to be SUPER structured and most of the parents didn't understand how critical that was.....so the behaviors were out of control and I as the autism teacher was put in the position of doing all activities as well as behavioral control and it was awful!

We quit.

My oldest son has been in scouting since 1st grade.  He loves it!  Here it costs .00, not 0.00.  You can either pay the fee up front, or you can sell popcorn, kringles, or chocolate to earn the money. My nt son was in scouts for three years and loved it.. Wow the prices are si high now we paid.. 35 to join.. and we sold popcorn also.. When my asd child gets older i am going to try this with him.. he slways enjoyed when i took him to meetings fr my older son.. Good luck..  My son loves cubs.  This is his second year and the cost is 160!!!!!!  The only thing that troubles him about the whole thing is the uniform!  He can't stand that thing!  LOL

My nt son is in scouting and I have been asst. leader for 4 years. My dd is in girl scouts and I have been for her leader for over 1 year.

Scouting..wow! our council fees are only . We must be making money on something else because we don't sell popcorn. Our money covers awards, and hall rentals..but we have our own dues for each den. The uniform was the biggest expense..over ; however...my son wore the same uniform from Tigers through Bears...we only changed since he became a Weblo and grew so much that his old shirt became much too short. Scouting is a great way to interact with other kids in a small group setting. It is very structured! Both of my kids LOVE scouting.

We do family scouting, so the whole family comes along.  He loves it.  I recently looked into regular scouting for him, but it seems that they combine age groups and have outdoor meetings at a different place each time.  The combination of a large group and a new setting would be difficult for him, so I've put those plans on hold.

Valley-Girl,where are you in Canada? And what does the fee cover for your Son?is the Uniform Covered?

Linda

Hi Linda,

We're in Barrie, Ontario.  The fee covers weekly cub meetings and badges.  Outings/camping, uniform and book...are all extra.

When the boys are older I do want to try scouting. No idea how it will go, a little shocked by the prices though! Wow!I was a den leader for my oldest son for almost 4 1/2 yrs. He is now
finishing the last 3 merit badges for his eagle scout. I think I will start this
up again in the next year. My husband is leaning towards Indian Guides
instead.

Scounting is great because it teaches so many skills. It does requires time
from parents but it is well worth it. The little group that I had got to be
pretty good friends to boot. The popcorn sales were not that bad. I would
ask the store manager at our local grocery store and set up a table to sell.
As for the fees, if it is a hardship, you can always ask the council to reduce it
or pay some now and some later. We tried scouts for one year, and it was a disaster.  He hated everything about it, including the other kids in his pack.  He was convinced that they were all trying to bug him all the time, so he was always yelling at everyone to leave him alone, which of course only drew attention to him, and the other kids then knew what buttons to push  He is also, how should I put it, not the outdoorsy type, so he hated almost all of the activities, with the exception of building a computer.  I know that scouts is great for a lot of kids on the spectrum, but it was a terrible fit for my kid. Scouts is great with a good troop and does allow accomidations for disability people. I hear indian guides is good with the right group also. It's great cause it also works on motorskills in cub level. If your child isn't the outdoor type don't do this program. Disability kids can do loan scouting also which is done at home and not part of a group. Popcorn prices are to high! Here we pay 10/12 to sogn up a year. The groups do fundraising to pay for all awards. Scouting does have scholarships ask the council office your in. Parent's have to be apart of the discipline also. Here all the BS troops are small. This countey is more about sports/ffa/fha.
