vitamin therapy questions | Autism PDD

Nita,

Some vitamins are water-soluble (like B vitamins and C) and others are fat-soluble (like Vitamin A).  Basically, that means that vitamin A will remain in your system (in fat stores) and could cause toxicity, so you have to be careful if you supplement them be/c you could have TOO much in your system, cuasing potentially serious problems.  The water soluble ones are peed out if you have too much of them, so they're easier to supplemnt (you don't have to be quite as concerned with the dosage).

I must've been having a bad day when I wrote my previous post be/c it sounds very alarmist, doesn't it?!  Sorry -- I didn't mean for it to come out that way!  We give Luke multivitamins along with B, C, and folic acid supplements (the last 3 being water soluble).  Flintstone vitamins are fine.

My daughter's homeopathist recommends super Nu-thera and DMG to start out with.  I would recommend starting out with one supplement at a time so u can evaluate the theraputic effect.  If you start off with more than one, you won't know which one, if any, are helping.

Most doctors wont give a script for vitamins unless you ask to have it compounded into suspension form. Then you need a script. I recommend compounding B6 and Magnesium. My son is on B6/Magnesium Therapy and takes DMG. He has done extremly well on both. I started with B6 which he has been on for a year and 2 months ago added the DMG . You will not get a script for DMG and it costs us .00 for a three month supply.

If you child can/will swallow pills then the B6 and Magnesium Oxide wont cost you much over the counter.  I hope this helps.

thanks. my daughter didnt sleep at all last night so i'm very tired and awfully cranky.

but anyway. i've been looking into super-nu-thera and DMG, but after seeing the costs of this stuff, i know that i absolutely cannot afford them. i was really hoping to get them prescribed instead. our physician will prescribe almost anything i ask for, but if that didnt work i was hoping maybe a homeopathic psychiatrist might be a good backup. my case manager suggested going to a chiropractor for vitamin therapy, but i wasnt sure if they would prescribe it or make me pay for it.

Tammy,

We are talking vitamins here not steroids... Vitamins have been around a lot longer than prescription meds and vitamins seem to be a lot safer these days.

**Every parent who is trying decide what diet, therapy, program, would be best for their child needs to look at all the info then make the choice for themselves. We may not all agree... I prefer B6, another person may not. In the end we just need to be here to support one another. That's why we are here!!!!!

Homeopathic medicines can counterreact against other prescription medicines and cause severe side effects.  The FDA in the past six months to a year advised against using any homeopathic medicines unless approved by a medical doctor.  Also some homeopathic remedies have substances in them that the NFL has on their banned list.  Do you really want those substances in your child's body or even your own if the NFL has already banned them?

Tammy

The Autism Research Institute in San Diego has a wealth of info on different therapies. I recommend talking to your doctor before starting any of them. Here is the links to their website. I hope it helps.

i've been doing some research on all these vitamins and supplements, and i have noticed how expensive they are. i'm already on a super tight budget and i know i cannot afford any of this.

do you think its possible for a doctor to prescribe these supplements?

normally i would assume they wouldnt, but i ask because last year a doctor actually prescribed mineral oil for my daughter's constipation. mineral oil! i took the prescription to my pharmacist and said "do i really have to get this from you? cant i just buy it? the doc told me i had to get it from you, but i thought that was stupid." so he walked out from behind the counter, grabbed a bottle of mineral oil off the shelf, and handed it to me. "there ya go!" he said!

if not a doctor, how about a homeopathic psychiatrist? i know of one that is going to "advise" me but my daughter is not actually her patient. or what about a chiropractor? my case manager was the first one to suggest vitamin therapy, and referred me to a local chiropractor.

also, which of these supplements should i try first? super-nu-thera? DMG? there's so many and i'm pretty confused.
*sigh* nevermind. i'll just wait until i can get an answer from our physician.

Sunny,
What would be the difference in cost if your doctor prescribed the supplements?  You'd still have to pay for them out-of-pocket, no?

Also, why in the world would your case worker suggest that you go to a CHIROPRACTOR for autism vitamin supplements??!!  That is VERY odd.  Why wouldn't you speak with your child's pediatrician or, at minimum, a nutritionist?

Be wary of homeopathic remedies -- vitamins and other herbal supplemnts are not regulated by the FDA and you have to be very careful of dosages and whatnot, especially when dealing with children.  Water-soluble vitamins are usually not dangerous (since the body usually expels anything not used), but fat-soluble vitamins can be very dangerous.

Heres some info I found earlier today and posted under one of the oral chelation threads...........

Kellie I don't want to answer for Sunny, But I think she was hoping if it was prescribed her insurance coverage for prescriptions would cover it.

Kellie what is a fat soluble vitamin?? Is this like a multi vitamin such as Flinstones?? Just curious. Thanks,

    Re: cost
i did cringe when I looked at the cost of SNT...but paid anyway...
I just got the bottle in the mail tonight and looked at how many servings are in it--nearly 6 months worth! So it turns out is not so bad if you only need to order twice a year...
I HTH you. I know sometimes even seems like a million to come up with.
