My son who is being monitored for ASD (mild - possibly more Aspergers) gets soooo amped up when he gets tired. He often starts making noises like crazy (he's 28 months) even though he has hundreds of words and uses all correctly in sentences when he wants to, etc... We assume its a type of vocal stimming. Anyways, I was just wondering if anyones NT kids really amp up like crazy and start babbling and acting overwhelmed by everything (cannot focus on anything, shakes his head like overwhelmed, acts like he doesn't understand a THING, etc...). He tends to only do this when really tired and he doesn't do it for like an hour straight, its like for moments at a time he seems to get really lost in his head....but like I said it only seems to happen when he is tired.
Does it sound like I am seeing things that some normal NT kids do or does he seem to be extra "crazy" due to any sensory issues, etc..
He's are only child, so I don't have alot of other reference to other kids.
p.s. He was in OT for a while, but they decided to stop it because he was doing so well, but I'm getting ready to start him back up because of some of these behaviors (vocal stimming, unable to focus). However, I don't want to walk into the OT and mention that these occur when he is tired and have them think I'm nuts and blow me off and say "many NT kids get this way when they are tired".
I just need to know the difference between my sons possible overload "stimming" and unfocus compared to NT overload and unfocus.
does that make sense?
So, go with your gut is I guess what I'm trying to say!
My asd son is actually my best and easiest sleeper. When my ASD son is overtired, he says "mommy, I'm tired" and lays down. If he starts to wind up, I can put on a favorite video and he'll lay on the sofa with a pillow and blanket and rest.
When my NT son is overtired, he is a basket case - crying, whining at the slightest thing, running around like a lunatic, not listening, talking back. He'll do something timeout-worthy, then he won't stay on the stool, so I'll lock him in his room and he'll bang on the door. Suddenly it will get quiet and I'll go to let him out of his timeout and when I open the door I'll find him sleeping on his bed looking like a little angel!
However, this is so in line with their personalities. C, my ASD son, has always been laid back and happy go lucky and R, my NT son has always been VERY emotional and quite the drama king.
