LeAnn, Ive got him some dinosaur ones and spiderman ones which he loved and helped him use them because at first he didint want anything to do with them. I saw the tire one it looks really cute, I think hed really like that one since he loves cars.
My guy will still use a sippy cup, and a regular cup. I don't think it's that big of a deal.
For the walking, my son did this too. He had a PT evaluation and was recommended to get special inserts for his shoes that will help him to walk the correct way, as well as correct his flat feet. Insurance paid for them (0!), and he's doing well with them. He also is getting PT 2x a week.
Norway mom- Those are very interesting points! That could be possible he had a growth spurt although hes always been in the 95% and recently hes averaged out maybe that has something to do with it. All I know is its veeery bothersome and so much so that it actually worries me! Only because he was so good at it before. Ill ask his ped. about that and the in toeing. Ive given him heavy mugs but he still manages somehow to spill
Paws- A couple of his sippy cups have straws and a couple dont. He definately prefers the straws to the reg. ones. Ill probably just switch them all over to straws till I can get this figured out.
Thanks guys My dd used the straw cups until about 4 1/2. She has hated spilling so those got us through until she could use a regular cup well.
Hayden has pretty much been good about not spilling milk/juice out of his cups but maybe in the past month or so he spills EVERY time he drinks something and its driving me crazy! He just dosnt seem to try to keep the liquid IN the cup and unaware of the way hes tilting the cup or simply knocking it down! Ive recently switched him back to sippy cups because it seems he cannot use a cup properly even with reminders and showing him how, im not sure why.
I mentioned this at his school eval and the special ed teacher said that was perfectly normal. I didint think it was at all but she said I shouldnt switch to sippy cups cuz it can affect his speech and how he places his tongue or something? It makes sense I guess but his clumsiness is getting worse and worse in that area anyway. He dosnt really seem to have many difficulties but cup spilling, he cant ride a tricycle and how he holds pencils.
Also he walks alittle strange where his feet are kinda turned inwards. My husband noticed it ever since he was little and the docs never thought anything about it and neither did I but lately Ive noticed it alot more. The left does it alot more than the right foot, what is that? Coorination or poor muscel tone? Is there anything I can do at home for him to correct how he places them? Thanks
I don't think it sounds "normal" to have a regression in this area, although there are a couple logical explanations. One, that because of a significant change in his life, he is more tired and stressed, and this is affecting both his coordination and his focus. Two, that because of a big growth spurt, his brain needs time to adjust to the new length of his arms (I learned in a college class that clumsy phases are completely normal during growth spurts, as the brain re-learns how to identify the bigger body's position in space).
If the problem persists, I'd mention it to your child's pediatrician. I'd also ask for a referral to a physical therapist for an evaluation of the toeing in.
Good luck with everything.
Hi Niki,
At age 7, he still spills constantly and drops things, too. So in my laziness, I give him sippy cups unless he's drinking water (not so critical on stickiness and stains).
Also when he was a baby, his OT recommended NOT using the valves because they keep the kid sucking, and not using their tongues. The tongue coordination is important for diction, swallowing, etc.
Even when they were little babies, I never used a valve. The sippy cups still spill, but just don't gush like an open cup.
Tonka makes pretty cool ones with a tire top, and you can also get SpongeBob and the Backyardigans. Not too babyish after all!
