Good news from the potty front! | Autism PDD

Share

Just had to share with you all my great day. As you may know from previous posts, my dd is pretty well potty trained at home but is petrified of any other toilet and has a complete, and utter meltdown at the mere thought of even entering a public potty (so is therefore still in pullsup when we are out). She's never used another potty before.

I've been working with her on gradually exposing her to the one at school as it seems the most like home (not in a big public place but just a single toilet off her classroom). At first she wouldn't go in the room at all with me and got really agitated at the mere mention. Gradually, she would get to where she would stand in there while I changed her pull-ups. We do this every day (3x a week) when I pick her up. I say something like "are you going to use the potty today" and she says "no". It's like a little game we play. Woo Hoo. That's the way. Congrats all round. HOORAY for you and your patience AND persistence!!!!
And congrats to her for being so brave!!
Isn't it amazing what all that praise will do?!?!  And NOT forcing it!?!?!
My son thrives on that too!
Congrats!  (was wondering how this was going!)

Good Job!

Thanks for all the support and encouragement. It's so great to be able to share the ups and downs with people who really understand what a true victory and cause for celebration that one amazing little potty sit was!

Just a quick update: today I asked her if she was going to use the potty at school with her teacher and she said "yeah" and she DID! She let her teacher take her to the potty, where she proceeded to take off her pants and sit on the potty like a pro again. Still no actual pee in the potty, but that hardly seems to matter at this point. After school, we went to the bookstore and I asked her about going to the potty there and she just said "no", didn't cry or get very upset, just said a very clear and adamant "no". So, there's some more progress right there....
