]brown144240615.903055555618 month old diagnosed yesterday with Sensory Integrations Dysfunction with Autistic Characteristics. Dr said not actual diagnosis of autism due to the fact that he's social, will make eye contact, and share toys with adults. Also diagnosed with migraines.

Any links, suggestions, info.....anything would be appreciated. Thank  you.

Current battles (the biggest) is hitting people hard to get their attention, getting him to sleep, getting him in car seat, and getting him to eat.

I couldn't help but post... my nephew has polymicrogyria... not everyday you "meet" someone with PMG!  How's your son doing??  My nephew is 21 months and still undergoing millions of rounds of testing.

have you contacted early intervention yet?

I really liked Greenspan's book "the child with special needs"

It's actually my 5 year old daughter that has PMG. She was just recently diagnosed and we're in the process of switching her ped. neuro to the one our 18 month old just went to. Have your nephew's family check out Dr. Dobyns at the University of Chicago. Thereis alos a great message board for PMG located at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/polymicrogyria/

Keargan is receiving his speech therapy currently and is being evaluated by a developmental evaluation center. They will get him in to see the local developmental pediatrician as well as an occupational therapists and let us know of either resources available.

Thanks for the title of the book,I'll be sure to check it out!

Hi  i just read your post,  I'm wondering how are your sons verbal skills,  Is he where he should be and also receptive language skill??? HE CURRENTLY ONLY SPEAKS 5 WORDS. WE ARE TEACHING HIM SIGN LANGUAGE BUT IT'S SLOW GOING. SEEMS LIKE HE DOESN'T LIKE THE MOTIONS OF SOME OF THE SIGNS! OF COURSE HE COULD JUST BE STUBBORN!! HE IS PRETTY PIG HEADED SOME TIMES, AS ARE ALL KIDS COMING UP ON TWO YEARS OLD!

Getting to sleep has always been  a tough one in my house also. Is your child still in a crib??   have you tried noise machines or light therapy or very low soft music???  I know these have worked for us. HE CO SLEEPS WITH US. WE HAD STARTED TO GET HIM TO SLEEP ON HIS OWN BUT HE SUDDENLY GOT WORSE AND WON'T SLEEP WITHOUT ME NOW. WE USED TO PLAY THE SAME CASSETTE EVERY NIGHT FOR HIM TO HELP HIM. NOW HE ASK FOR IT BUT ONCE IT'S PLAYING IT SEEMS TO HURT HIM! WHAT ARE NOISE MACHINES AND LIGHT THERAPY?

The hitting for attention im not sure about.  but if you child is nonverbal you'll need to teach another gesture for getting your attention HE HAS A CERTAIN SOUND HE MAKES TO GET SOMEONE'S ATTENTION BUT STRANGERS DON'T RECOGNIZE IT AS SUCH. HE'S STARTING TO GET IN THE HABIT OF GRABBING YOUR FACE AND MOVING IT SO YOU'RE LOOKING AT HIM BUT THIS IS SOMETHING WE'RE TRYING TO REDIRECT FROM.

what types of sensory issues does he have????  is he hypersensitive???  if he is the car seat could be extremely uncomfortable for him. they tend to have a rough covering,  especially in the summer months when the kids are wearing short sleeves and shorts.   HE IS VERY HYPERSENSITIVE TO ALOT OF THINGS BUT OBLIVIOUS TO OTHERS. IT DOES APPEAR THAT THE SEAT AND THE STRAPS BOTHER HIM. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

as for links  Norwaymom is the best to turn to for that,  she has an entire library of links.....she's the best. I'LL CHECK IT OUT! THANKS!

best of luck to you

I'm also wondering how an 18 mth old  was diagnosed with Migraines.   just curious
OUR SON HAS GRABBED HIS HEAD AND COMMUNICATED PAIN FOR A VERY LONG TIME. HE ALSO BECOMES MORE SENSITIVE TO LIGHT AND SOUNDS AT THIS TIME AND USUALLY WON'T EAT. HIS HEAD HURTS MOST DAYS A WEEK. I'VE WONDERED ABOUT ASKING FOR AN MRI OR SUCH JUST TO RULE OUT ANY OTHER PROBLEMS. MAYBE I'M JUST PARANOID THOUGH!

Part of the reason i asked is because the light sensitivity and sound sensitivity could be more of a sensory issue.   the other reason i asked is because migraines are not normally evident in such young children,  it is my understanding that migraines surface at 10 or older.

i would get a second opinion on the migraines

the sound machine is a small white machine that makes a humming sound,  i had one in the past which someone gave me,  it was rather old but i know they still sell them.

I played a tape for my kids at bedtime called Celtic lullabies, little dreams for little souls,  the cover is a light blue color with a moon on it.   It is the most soothing music you could ever hear,  could put anyone to sleep

The light therapy is a box or cube, they come in different sizes they give off a soft colored light which is continuously changing color.   the one i have is a small cube ( about the size of a rubix cube) battery operated.  very relaxing.

In regards to the car seat,  I would try wrapping the straps in a soft fabric,  something that would be soothing to him.

We also cosleep here,  I have 2 boys 3 and 4,  One likes a very light touch,   i give him what we call the back tickle.   very light touch on his back with my fingertips.   My other son like a more firm massage,  with him I would squeeze his calves and thighs,  It only takes a couple times before he calms down.

its just a matter of figuring out what makes them calm.  trial and error ,  keep trying different things and see what works best for him.

let us know how things are going.

With a PDD-NOS diag. please look at www.prisms.org and check into Smith-Magenis Syndrome and see if he would fit any of the traits. He may not but "SMS" is soooo  very much like ASD and PDD that it often gets misdiagnosed. Just do your child a favor and rule it out. My son was diag. incorrectly for 7 yrs. and at age 14 was correctly diagnosed. It is done at a genetics lab. Take 3-6 wks. for results and detects a chromosomal deletion. Its not scary,my childs donewonderful as he ages.
