New here, will post intro soon.
Our 11 yr old severely autistic son had a seizure which lasted 3 minutes at his school yesterday for the first time. He was taken to A&E and we met him there. His pulse rate was monitored and he had his blood taken to check for any viruses that may have caused the seizure, it was all ok.
What actually triggered the seizure was that the fire alarm went off in the school twice and was a false alarm, they evacuated the children quickly but as our son was taken out to the playground he went absent, fell to the ground, struck his head on the floor and started to fit, shaking all over, then fell asleep. He was incontinent as well. Then he vomited at the hospital. Was very sleepy.
We were given no follow up letter to take home with us for our GP and I spoke to our son's psychologist today who said that he needs to be referred onto to a neurologist.
My question is...........my husband has company health insurance and we would like to go private to get our son seen as quick as possible. Does anyone know of a consultant neurologist anywhere in the UK that specialises in autism? Am in a state of shock.
With many thanks
I cannot help you other than by <BUMPING> this ... and hope that both he and you are feeling better, today. I am so sorry you are having this frightening experience.
Thanks so much for your kind repliesMy son has a seizure disorder but he is much younger...we are also in the U.S. so I have no advice on neuros or insurance.
I have read that seizures and autism are very common together and have also read that sometimes puberty can bring new seizures on...that might be something to research a little. But yes he needs a neuro, our son's pediatrician doesn't do or know much about seizures, so he leaves that all to the neuro, but he is great in that he keeps himself very informed so he knows exactly where Mason is at with the seizures.
Good luck, welcome, and if you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Seizure's are a very scary thing to witness, but for many they are harmless and controllable with the right meds. We aren't in that group yet, but I am very optimistic that it will happen!
Wow, I'm sorry that you're dealing with this but welcome! What about the Hospitals in the area? If one of them is well known they'll probably have a decent neurologist. Also, ask for referrals. I'm sorry I don't know anyone in the UK but check with doctors in the area to see if they can recommend anyone. Has he had any seizures since then? Hopefully you can get him in soon, I'm sure you'll find someone! I'm an EMT so I get called often to seizure calls but it's still scary, especially if it's your child. Keep us posted and try not to worry too much (easier said than done!) Hi Ali,
