missed first week of school... bad admin. | Autism PDD

If I were you I would put a call into your State Department of Education and
file a complaint asap. Depriving a special needs child of schooling due to a
busy schedule is beyond acceptable. They may be able to help put some fire
under his butt. we are so upset.  my son is missing his first week of school.  even though he was initially placed in a very good school, now he is just school-less and he did not attend the first two days of school.  we are so upset.  the administrator in charge of putting him in the class tells us that he only works with placing the kids on friday, so our son will have to wait until next monday to go to school.  what the hell... only works on placing kids on fridays?  what does he do the rest of the week.  we went to see his teacher and she said that she has room for him and would love to see him in her class, but that she needs curt's permission.  we are so sad that our son is being deprived of his first week of school because this admin. person thinks that he is too busy to write a simple email to a teacher.  i noticed that someone with his exact same name was disbarred as an attorney in our state.  i wouldn't doubt it if this is the same guy.  we are just in shock... how did this happen to our son?  we waited so long for his school to start and now he is just stuck in some administrative b.s. "oh, well, i won't be in the office where i have those papers until friday... and ... you have to wait until monday"  even though his teacher has read his IEP and also got an email from me about the changes he has made and ... spoke with me and my husband in person on the first day of school when we were so upset about this happening to him.

Does the Admin answer to someone above him? Like the Superintendant? Can you talk to this person?

It probably won't change anything at this time, but if this a pattern of the SD that repeats itself,  you will be well prepared.

Good luck. I hope your child has a wonderful first day at school ( when it happens)

Doesn't sound right. Can they do this?

One thing to note...if your son was not able to start his classes like any other child -NT or otherwise - in the district, and it was because of the administrator's schedule and/or unwillingness to handle school district business during proper school hours, then there's a larger issue of professionalism and competency.

This is not happening because your child is not ready, willing and able to attend school - it is happening because of a school district official's behavior.  Go over his head to the superintendent, and consider reporting the administrator to the state board of education.

Since it is happening because of the administrator's behavior, I would ask for compensatory services for the time your son has missed - he's entitled to services from Day 1 of school if that's what's been determined. He's missing it because of the administrator's choice - not your's or your son's.

ugh... i am keeping the emails on file.  i noticed that he has a lot of grammatical errors in his emails & he definately stated several times that he doesn't work on this except on Fridays... *we are just in schock right now*All our administrater's here stink! They single out kids! This is DEFINITELY not only unprofessonal but against the law. I'd call the superintendent of schools and get an appointment. Make it CLEAR that if this is not fixed IMMEDIATELY, you will file a State Complaint.  Any parent can do this and the state MUST investigate it. Look at your Procdural Safeguards notice to find out how.  Then, put in writing the situation and send it to the adminstrator, his immediate supervisor and the superintendent INSISTING that your child get compensatory hours for all that he has missed, which needs to include all the therapies missed.  Have them send the teachers and therapists to your home so that you do not have to go to the trouble or expense of bringing your child anywhere.  our son will start school on monday.  my husband and i think the admin person has serious issues and is on a power trip.  he wants to show us that nothing will happen unless/until he says so.  i sent several emails ... department of public instruction, teacher, school principal.  it made him call us today but apparently didn't scare him enough to put our son into school as of today.  he lost 4 days ... and his mom isn't going to let this one slide. You must send a letter asking for compensatory services. Ask for 6 hours of instruction (or whatever your state minimum is -- call the Dept. of Ed.) for EACH DAY your child is not in school. Bring the letter to the office and have it date stamped and have a copy date stamped for your files.  Tell them that you expect compensatory instructional hours for EVERY hour your child misses or you will file an official state complaint. Then, go to your state dept. of ed. website and download a form to see what info you MUST include in your state in order to file a state complaint.  Or get a lawyer. One phone call to the Sped Admin. oughtta do it.
