Superb memory, air speller (I have to have him repeat it so I can scratch it on my hand to figure it out!!!), learning the electric guitar (wants to be the future Jimmy Page-Led Zepplin), and a great affinity for all kinds of music, picking out all of the instruments he hears.
I loved reading all of the posts!!R has a very good memory too and he is just incredibly loving to the people he chooses to love - when he holds my face in his hands and covers my face with kisses - its the best feeling in the world
Abigail has an intense fascination with bugs (especially butterflies) and has a savant ability to catch insects such as houseflies and moths by sneaking up on them, slowly easying her her arm towards them and grabbing their wings with a pincer grip - she does it very slowly and can catch more bugs this way than you'd believe
Both seem to have some artistic talent, but I'm not sure if it really is talent or just something they do more than other kids their age, and so are a little better at it than a lot of kids their age. Here's their album (these were all done around 4.5-4.9, no real recent stuff - need to update):

Nikolas is hyperlexic, he has taught himself to read and he is fascinated with animals. He has every animal picture book I can find, and he sits there and "studies" them. That child knows the difference between a lizard and an iguana, and I can't fool him. I called the iguana a lizard to simplify things and he corrected me. He figured out the word and connected it to the picture, all on his own. He also knows the difference between a macaw, a parrot and a toucan, a gorilla, a monkey and an orengatain. And it goes on and on. I think he knows every animal and species in the animal kingdom. He can also read the word without the picture and know exactly what he is saying. Its pretty amazing.
Andrew knows the way to about everywhere we have ever been, and if I go a different way he lets me know.
Jacob uses the edge of the window pane to trap the flies. It's funny watching him do it. I've tried recording it, but as soon as the camcorder came on he was just staring at it like he usually does. I can't coax a smile out of the kid for pictures at all.Hi everyone
Back in Jan. I posted a thread ( whats your childs special gift), Because there seems to be alot more families and because I enjoyed it so much, I thought I would ask it again.
So here it goes... Does your child have a special gift? I would love to hear their stories!!
Mona, Grandma to Devin 3yrs ASD / SID
O ya I forgot hayden also loves to sing and he has amazingly good pitch. He has a very nice voice for such a little kid it amazes me! And its not just cuz im his mother He loves Bob Marley and listening to his songs and people think its so funny how excited he gets and when he yells out the name of the song playing.I'm starting to think that for my son it might be puzzles. He's up to beingMy son wanted me to help him dive like his sister yesterday! I'n sad swimming season is almost over. He loves doing new tricks!
Sam has an amazing memory. He has a HUGE collection of Lego Bionicles, maybe 60 of them now (bio-dad buys plastic rather than paying child support) Each kit comes with maybe 50 pieces. Sam can identify each piece and which kit it came from. He can also find the pieces he needs in a huge pile at a glance (but can't find his socks even if they're right in front of him)
Sam's sense of humour is his other special gift. He can come up with stuff that makes me stop and scratch my head. His jokes are so off the wall that it takes me a few moments to get it ( I can't tell a joke to save my life and I am always the last one to *get it*)
Also, like Tzoya's son, Sam is a happy, easy-going child who is very socially motivated. I see him accomplishing his goal of becoming a robotics engineer - I don't know the degree of support he will need to do this, but I will get him it for him when the time comes.
mama to Sam 8 yrs PDD NOS OCD ODD PPD and Alex 2yrs
My son's greatest gift is he ability to bounce back. He's invariably happy, overall, and very, very forgiving. I know because I'm his mother and I have plenty to be forgiven for, since all mothers are human. He tends to be VERY social and takes an interest in everyone he meets. Social success makes him happy. He doesn't function on a normal level for a 16yo, but he does get himself "out there." I love him and SO appreciate all his good-natured efforts to make everyone else pleased with him and his behavior. I KNOW he has taught me FAR more than I've taught him. As hard as our lives have been with autism, we have also been very, very blessed.
Tzoya, that is awesome, and so true. I feel that way about my son too. His special gift is that while he is mischevious, he readily says "I'm sorry", shows remorse, accepts criticism easily (as in correcting him or fussing at him when he's acting inappropriately) and wants me to be happy with him.
Oh geez- history...specifically AMERICAN history....can tell you battles, battlefields, yrs, dates, times, places...loves it. He is passionate about it. To hear his knowledge you'd never know he needs such help bathing himself! He is an avid reader....
And- that memory of his.....
Not just a gift- a BLESSING!
and, may I add- Jeremy wants to work in a museum when he is old enough to.
Riley has a photographic memory and he astounds us daily with what he remembers .............. from way back and the details... He can tell us who gave him what for last Christmas and the last 2 birthdays. Hayden goes around telling people all about dinosaur facts and the differnet names. Hel go around announcing to people which ones are the carnivores who eat meat and the herbivores who eat plants. People are always amazed by his knowledge on his favorite topic
lol Sharon - the bug whisperers! Seriously - have you ever tried to catch a housefly with a pincer grip? I can occasionally swat one, but it's amazing how they can just finesse it by moving so slowly and smoothly.
Jason has an amazing ability to sing. He can hear a song once memorize it and sing on pitch which doesn't happen with many five year olds. He is also very mechanical and can take things apart and figure out how they work and then put them back together. he also has an amazing ability to make up stories and adventures.
Samuel has musical ability and loves to play on the piano. He also is my spider monkey and can climb anything without fear (Of course it means giving me heart failure lots!) He also is fabulous at figuring out how things work and trying to make them work better.
J- artisticT has the vivid and intense memory thing, too. Soemthing that happened a year ago might as well have been an hour ago. That has its drawbacks ... since she does not understand WE do not have that ability! Or that friends have moved on, etc.
She also is artistic ... and uses that memory in drawings. And SPELLING.
But from what I can tell, concrete reasoning is going to become (functionally) her greatest gift. She understands how and why things WORK! Including the only-recently-grasped phonetic spelling rules ... LOL.
Jason doesn't have any special skills, though he does seem to have an affinity for puzzles.
What he does have is the most room-lighting smile and the biggest, cutest laugh. He also has the ability to help me realize that the world is both bigger and smaller than I think it is, and that the little things really do matter in life.
