Just back from the IEP meeting | Autism PDD

Congradulations on getting things worked out.  I hope Brendon has a great year!I also wanted to say that in the part of the IEP where they do the basic description of Brendon...the background area....they wrote in there, "Parent is very knowledgable and will be a valuable resource in the education process."Way to go Mary!

That is great news for you - and what great feedback for a  mommy that knows what to do for her boys!!!

I have an in home evaluation on Friday for IEP.  Is it a long process from the first eval until they may be able to start a pre-k program??

Just wondering what to expect.

My DS is 3 and showing signs of asd - has speech delay -both expressive, receptive, sensory issues and other signs as well.

I can actually kinda answer this question...When B was 3 they started him in school on an evaluation IEP.  He was evaluated for 60 days and then we sat down and did a finalized IEP.  He was in school the whole time.  I've never done an in home IEP so I can't answer that question for you.  Good for you. I have to get smart too as we are about to move, I think it will be like starting over.

Congrats, Mary!  Jase is finally going to start pre-K...we have the transition meeting a week from today, and he'll start the following Monday, if I have my way.  (And they agree, so it shouldn't be a problem)

Juniper, I had an in-home IEP meeting.  In a lot of ways, it was like a big bull/brainstorming session, and everyone chipped in their ideas.  It took a little while longer to get everything done than it otherwise would, since there was a two week break in there for SD personnel, but I had the IEP meeting the second week of July, and I got the finalized copy of the IEP last week.  All that said, Jason was recieving services in the interim, so that wasn't affected by the lack of a formalized IEP.

Are you having your initial assessment for the school district done, to see if he is eligible for services, or is this going to be the IEP meeting?  That changes the timeline you can expect.  They do the assessments first (in our case, verifying the dx given by the neuropsych), and then we had the IEP meeting.

Congrats again, Mary!  It's really nice when the school district personnel recognize and appreciate all the effort you put in, isn't it?  A pat on the back always helps me!  :)

I pretty much got everthing I requested except a 1:1 aid.  They are trying to find someone to fill the position.  All of the goals and objectives I wanted were put on the IEP.  There were academic, social, compliance, and self help goals.  I think all of the goals we set are attainable this year too, so there should be no problems down the road.  We decided to ease him into school.  Next week he will start off at 2 hours a day, from 8 to 10am.  The following 2 weeks will be half days, from 8 to 12.  On October 1st, he'll have his first full day of school.  B is going to start the year in a self contained classroom and gradually be worked into the regular classroom setting.  We're hoping by the end of next year he'll spend most of his time in a mainstream classroom.  I'll update more after he actually starts.

ETA:  Thank you to all of the parents on this forum who have helped, offered advice, comiserated with me, and just been there when I needed a shoulder to cry on through this process.  Thank Tzoya for turning me on to "Wrights Law".  I knew my battle plan going in and it worked.

Evie -

Yes, it is the first meeting with the school district, they are going to evaluate him in the home and then possibly do a playgroup sesssion to see if he qualifies. I do have some paperwork from the neurologist but by law I guess they do their own evaluation.

So i guess its not an IEP meeting - just the first visit.

I hope it goes ok - DS gets upset when he sees new faces, so we will see.

How has your 3 year old done in school - have you seen improvements??

You have a PM, juniper!  :)Way to go!  You should be proud of your great job as your son's advocate!
