Aide No Show On First Day | Autism PDD

Hope it all works out for our kids this year. Myself and another Se mom filed a complain with tea. Her daughter has downs and they list her as  speech as her dx. Rachael

This county is poor also!

It lacks the  correct amount of therapists necessary for SE. It also lacks in the services area.

daniel's mom39330.7728009259You know my ds was promised an 1:1 aide for this year and then they
backpaddled due to budget problems. I spent the summer making a real
pest of myself and writing letters to the local special ed department, the
local superintendent and the schoolboard. We got an aide. I met her today
(first day of school) and she has no clue about autism but I am okay with
her. I will make her a package of information on my ds and the things I
want her to pay attention to/work on with my ds.
Advice; What does your ds's IEP say? Does it say 1:1 aide?
If so I would call the county education department ask for the person in
charge of special ed and let her know how vital it is that your ds has help
and consistancy especially during transition time. In my experience
things the sd tells you are not always to be dependend on.You need
things in writing. If she says there will be someone tomorrow summerize
the conversation and sent a copy of it to her, the resource room , the
principal and whoever else you want to know. Be polite, be an advocate
for your kid and know your rights (wrightslaw.com is a good start on
special education law). An advocate is not a bad idea either.
An aide might or might not have any experience or knowledge - it is a
real luck of the draw. You can specify a paraprofessional instead of an
aide - para's have more experience. You can try and request training or
input in hiring of an aide. But usually if the IEP says aide it does mean
very minimum training and they don't need credentials (do not get paid
much either). Of course you can be a polite and persistant pain and
request training for the aide or request a new aide.
What would I do? I do not have that much experience, hopefully Tzoya will
chime in here. But at this time I would a.) call an IEP meeting asap to
discuss your concerns and b.) find someone in the district who will make
it their problem to solve. At my ds's last school I had good rapport with
the principal and I just plonk right in her office and tell her my problem
and get her to take the responsibility to figure it out. At my ds's new
school the principal is not so helpful but I have been able to work well
with someone in the special ed department.

Greetings,
I am fairly new to this board.
I was about to write my intro today after leaving my DS at school today but to my disappointment upon taking him to school his aide or as the district calls it his Triple A was not available.
My DS is 6 and is Autistic and is mainstreamed into 1st grade.
I am extremely concerned as well as frustrated that the district failed to provide the services needed his first day.
I spoke to the appropriate sources at his school and they assured me he would have temporary assistance today and hopefully the aide is assigned soon.
Meanwhile he is going to still have his inclusion with his Kinder Special Ed teacher and she is keeping in touch with me.
My DS was so happy and thrilled to be back in school and I hope he can get by today.

I contacted the regional center to see if they can contact the school district to see what happened but at the moment I wish there was so much more I can do other than wait.

If anyone else has any suggestions please reply.
I am in the Los Angeles area.

So I tried repeatedly trying to contact my DS' Service Coordinator  through the regional center I found out she is on vacation.
My mother in law who is a teacher suggested I contact them so they can seek answers as to what is happening.
I did however find a number for a school districts complaint line online.
I called and stated what was happening and they got back to me in 2 hrs. They stated that if there is no aide or temp available tomorrow or during the week I can file for Compistory (sp) Time.
And they would have a support unit investigate.
I also found out that meanwhile my son was a temporary aide through the school that is with him but I am concerned as to weather they have the credentials to be working with a child of special needs.

Again if anyone has any suggestions please throw them my way.
After browsing the forums I also called some advocates but most of them in my area seem very pricey.
But I am willing to go all out if nothing is done.
