My son Max has always been afraid of birds.  Any time I have tried to get him to go into a pet store, as soon as he sees or hears the birds he's heading in the opposite direction.  I think it has to do with their sounds.  Funny thing is we have an African Grey parrot that he doesn't have a problem with.  It's just the small birds.  Anyone else ever deal with this?

hi

my son is terrified of birdsong

he doesnt even have to see the bird

we bought a video and cd one all about birds and one with just birds singing

we put the cd on very low at first so he could just hear it then over a period of time turned up the volume

then we had to make him see where the bird song came in

we watched the video also and did the same

it takes time

he is still edgy about them but he know longer throws himself to the floor every tweet

its kinda funny, my parents 13 year old african grey is named Max. I know, the only possible thing I can think of, is that when I was pretty young still and getting dragged into pet stores with my folks, all I could think of was that some bird will fly onto me and eather bite me or make a mess on my clothing (i was always pretty neat).

My son is generally leary about animals, but doesn't have much contact with birds.

If you wanted to try a social story, here's one about fear of spiders that you could adapt.

If you want to chart out your son's sensory issues, here's a checklist:

I hope someone has some experience to share with you.

Birds can be pretty intimidating especially if they squak :)
