Sharlet’s Irlen lensesThanks for the link, mamajot! This sounds like something that could probably help Jason...he's got a lot of issues with light sensitivity...I'll have to look into seeing whether or not he could use/get them. Glad they are helping Sharlet, Allegra! She sure looks cute in them, and it's really great that she actually likes wearing them. Makes you wonder how much of a difference it must be making for her! WOW. Cool how she responds to them. Kind of a Lennon look ... but she is WAY cuter! (And that's from an inveterate FAN). Hi Allegra, Sharlet is so cute in her glasses. I was interested in this a while back, but could not get any parent to give an opinion on it. Please what was the indication for getting Sharlet the irlen glasses? Please let us know what improvements you observe. Concernedpa. I'm going to look into these. My dd likes to wear sunglasses (she has many pairs and loves to match them with her outfits). Sharlet looks adorable!
She's adorable. Let us know how it goes. I found this link. http://www.autism.org/irlen.html I have heard about these helping quite a bit with reading problems. I think this is a neat idea, you will know if they are working if she insists on keeping them on.Allegra what are they suppose to do? Make her calmer and more able to focus?Because Sharlet is not verbal enough to test, for now we have just gonefor what works. She was given 6 pairs of lenses (blue.purple, pink, red, orange, green) to try at home for a while. All of which she clearly took off and said "no" when I put them on her. Except the pink and red which she had on for a while but quickly discarded. The orange she put on herself and said "yes" she has been wearing them since. She puts them on herself when she gets up in the morning and takes them off when it's getting dark as she only likes to wear them during the day. When she is older/more verbal she will be formally tested and may choose a different lens colour. I have found the lenses to be very good for her, she is able to concentrate for longer periods and she performs better at structured tasks. I also find she has fewer episodes of sensory overload/over stimulation. She is doing the second half of her pep-r tomorrow, the first half was done without the lenses, I am interested to see if they make a difference. I will keep you updated. She is such a doll ! That's interesting that she picked orange lenses over the other colors - I wonder how this affects her perception of the world? My favorite sunglasses had orangey-pink lenses and it may just be my imagination but I think I felt calmer, less stressed wearing them. I have a pair of pale pink ones but it's not the same. My dh has a pair of orange-lens sunglasses that he preferes over others. I've tried to get Sam to try on different colored lens but he hates to feel of wearing sunglasses. I remember reading Donna Williams experience of Arlen lenses (in Somebody Somewhere) and I was inspired to experiment. This just reminded me that I have some colored transparencies I was going to try over a page of words that Sam can read - just to see if it makes it easier to read the words. Anyone else use colored glasses or transparencies ?? mama to Sam 8yrs PDD NOS OCD ODD PPD and Alex 2yr Hi guys, Thought I'd post a pic of Sharlet's new Irlen lenses. The framesaren't right, we are ordering them but these are the ones on loan. She tried 6 different colours and chose these orange ones. when she gets older she will be tested formally and will have a more custom coloured lens. I couldn't get it to post the pic so I just put it in my sig... How did the orange get picked over the other colors? and please share whatever benefits and questions you have about your experience with the lenses. I am very curious.Allegra it says it is not there and the page can't open. oh well, more than one way to skin a cat lol Allegra, Would love to see how Sharlet goes with these. She looks adorable (as usual!) Mysh Your girls are all gorgeous!! Is Sharlet sensitive to light? I'm just wondering if this is something I should look into. My oldest is very light-sensitive; she never leaves the house without sunglasses. I have no idea if this light sensitivity impacts on her learning and reading, but I'm going to look into it. How expensive are the glasses? Thanks, Sharon This is SO WEIRD!Gage has his appointment w the certified Irlen lens psychiatrist here in town (I think she just happens to be a psychiatrist AND an Ireln lens specialist though LOL I don't think they are related to psychiatry) on FRIDAY! I found out about them at the conference. An Aspie was wearing them, and they were also mentioned by Temple Grandin! I cannot wait to find out if they help Gage. I think anything that helps him be more calm & focus better is worth a try, right? He does not have any reading problems though, he loves reading, so I am interested in seeing what she says. I really like the orange ones! You can still see her pretty eyes that way. One of the guys at the conference had on really dark purple and you could not see his eyes - as it turns out, when I went up to speak with him he actually kept his eyes shut behind them if your looked close enough! I think he had to shut his eyes to keep from getting over stimulated, I also think that is why the shade was so dark. Tell us how it goes!ShelleyR you need to find an Irlen lens specialist in your area. Do a google search, there are plenty of certified diagnosticians out there. We were lucky enough to have have one in our area who is also a GP so we were able to claim everything except the lenses themselves on medicare paying not too much out of pocket. If she hadn't been a GP also it would not have been covered. If it's not covered all up including consultations, frames and lenses it can cost around $600-$800 but that is if you can't get it covered by your insurance or equivalent to medicare. Seriously, I applaud and admire the lengths that you and your family are going to help this angel be comfortable with the way that the world spins for her. Much love and respect. She looks adorable ...thank you for sharing...I had never heard of the Irlen lenses before...please keep us posted on how she is doing with them.Allegra, Any update on Sharlet's Irlen glasses? Can't wait to find out how they are working for her. Concernedpa. Sharlet looks so stinking cute! I always loved those blueblock sunglasses/amber colored but the frames were hidious:P I am happy she is putting them on which means she is getting something out of them..I read Donna Williams books and she raves about how they helped her:) Where do you find them: She looks adorable! I hope they work well for her! Keep us posted on how she is doing!free progrm I use to make computer screen easier on my eyes but it won't work on this site: http://www.thomson-software-solutions.com/html/screen_tinter .html Irlen.com
