around other kids? My boy (4.11) wants to play but he gets angry easily after a while when the others don't do what he wants or when they don't want to play with him and will cry, pout or look ridiculous to be honest. I am sure he wants to hit, but is trying to hold back.
Super super egotistical and sensitive. He gets all hyped up especially with the boys, gets rough and starts to look aggressive to them. He's not agressive, but it's a problem.
wwyd? Social skill classes and ot have done nothing.
I have two of Gutsteins books and I am actually going to a workshop by
him in a few weeks.I think they recommend that you hire a consultant but
for financial and logistical reasons I do not think we will. I have heard
that some therapists now combine aba with rdi or ot and rdi , so I think it
is going to be an important component that is going to be around.
I have not done it yet either and I do not really want to recommennd /
praise anything I do not know all that much about.
I'll post a link to RDI. You could also get Gutstein's' relationship
development intervention with young children' or 'autism aspergers:
solving the relationship puzzle' from the library.
http://www.rdiconnect.com/My ds has problems playing too. I think it is a mixture of things: having a
poor understanding of what others might be thinking, wanting/needing
to control environment, poor ability to read faces and social cues, social
immaturity.....I think your sons problems and reactions sound pretty
typical for a higher functioning kid. He seems really frustrated with not
being able to connect with others.
Steven Gutstein has written some stuff on relationship development
interventon (RDI ) and I am looking into it for my son. I believe it looks at
what basic skills a kid might be missing to connect - like no gazing or
referrencing - and finding ways to teach that.
Social stories on play behavior and being a good friend might help some
but play is usually pretty fluid and it gets more and more sophisticated as
kids get older.
Thanks Micki. When you say you're looking into RDI, is it something you will work with on your owen with him or you must find someone to do this?
I'm in a major city and can't believe I've never heard of RDI. What is it in a nutshell? how would one session be like?
If he's four you need to factor in the testosterone surge common to the age into things.
