My name is Jenny. I am Bretts mom. Brett is 8 years old and has been diagnosed with LOTS of different things ADHD, ODD, mood disorder, Aspergers.  This is so confusing!  I guess we were in denial for far too long. Im here mainly for support!  We (dad, brother and I) have been having a rough time. Homework sparks it. Brett gets very aggressive and physical. He is in 3rd grade and operating at a K-1 grade level. He does have an IEP. I applied for SSI back in March. Still waiting....I am hoping no news is good news.

Lots of people don't understand why we don't want to attend public outings, etc. My son (our son) is my whole world and I feel like we are losing control of him.  Does it get any easier???

i am shell mum of 6 one with autism one with aspergers one with traits one with lbd

It does not get easier as such

the more we learn the more we know and that probably makes it seem easier at times

There are many people who dont want to understand there lives are as they say normal and they done want disabilitys ruining that

you will get to the point when the stares and points will not matter anymore

you are not losing control at all hun

i bet there is not one person on here who has not felt like they are useless or that they have no control ,but you do my friend

and you will see

theres a lot of freinds on here and we will all be here to help you through the good and the bad

it will surprise you how much another parents positve comments can make youfeel better

Hi Jenny,

Welcome to the forum.  I am glad you are accepting the fact that Brett has issues.  Don't we all?  He just has more than the average kid.  Knowledge is power, the more you understand what his issues are the more you will be able to manage him and arm his with the ability to cope more easily.  You will learn a lot of coping mechanisms and gain more understanding here.  Is Brett being managed by a good physician who has experience in this area?  You will be able to manage things better.  We have all been where you are now.  It does get better.

Welcome to the forum.  My son with autism is 9 years old, and we struggle with homework too.  Right now there's a topic about homework:

For us, life got easier when we figured out how to prevent and handle meltdowns, and when we figured out his sensory issues and how to manage them.  Here are some resources in those areas -- maybe they'll work for you too.

http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=17134&am p;KW=meltdown+resources - a topic on our forum with links that have been helpful (even life changing) for other parents in this group.

Good luck with everything!

Welcome to the board. You might want to talk to Teachers about getting homework modified so there is not so much, or eliminate it all together. It was such a nightmare for us we had to make changes for the whole family's sake.   Welcome to the family Jenny. You will find lots of support and awesome information here. This forum has been a life-line for me for a few months now, and you will get to know some of the greatest parents on the planet. We are here for you, don't be afraid to ask for help, thats the first step. Welcome!

Welcome Jenny!!

I agree with the others, this place is so filled with people who undestand...it truly does feel like family! Keep coming back and read lots! My son Billy was recently Dx autistic. He was mis dx for years...things got better for us when he was finally dx correctly, simply because we knew better on how to handle him. Still waiting for the middle one to be evaluated (chris). Things get better as you learn more about what is going on. Educate yourself as much as you can and come here for the support and understanding of others...it truly does make a world of difference. You will be ok, and so will your family. Take care and good luck!
