Social skills at school | Autism PDD

The social skills class is taught by both the special ed teacher and the speech language pathologist.  For the first time this year, there will be kids in the group who do not have a diagnosis or an IEP.  They felt there were students in the general ed population who would benefit from the class, and they liked the idea of an even larger group of students.  A lot of kids at school receive just speech services or work with the reading specialist......Why not include regular ed students in social skills class?  I think it's a great idea and I'm interrested in seeing how it works out.Sounds like you guys have great school systems. We have NO social skills services in mine, they feel as long as my son is not hitting or screaming at the others he is fine!!!! My TSS (I think many of you call her a Para Pro, but my TSS is supplied by me and my insurance company) has worked consistently with my son on social skills training as well as my family. The school system will not give my son an IEP for behavior issues because he is too smart and passes all of THEIR tests. I am so mad I could scream!

Who teaches Social Skills, at your school? And, who would you prefer?

We had been told it was the SpEd teacher, but now it turns out this year it is the SLP!  I think I prefer  that as it is dovetails with semantics and pragmatics ...

Of course, individuals in either field might excel at it!

Last year my son was taught by the SLP.  He did very well her.  This year he will be taught by the Spec Ed teacher with help from the school psych.  And it is more of a social skills group with some NT kids and 4 AS kids.

We never got social skills teaching for Sarah..I wrote out a list of what social skills she needed and how to achieve them and had the teacher give copies to all  the other teachers involved with her..whether they did any of them is unknown? I wish we has social classes or something here...I think in high school they do them~more for aspergers kids.  Really sad services in elementary...I took her to a ABA playgroup 2x a week till this summer and ended it.  It will have to come from her now that we taught her all we know to teach her...cant seem to force her to love peers..she is slowly connecting to them this year without no prompting:)

Sam has a para-pro, this is their 3rd yr together. She does social skills 3x week and empathy/emotion training the other 2 days. Social skills are a big part of Sam's IEP  and the school is supportive of any ASD techniques that can be used in the class. The para-pro is also on playground duty - it was exciting to see how little support he needed in June compared to the year previous. We are truly blessed in our para-pro. She tells me that she can't help but love Sam

Autism consultant has a Social Skills class once a week for 45 min. The SP Ed Teacher has done somethings with him too, but not on a regular basis. I prefer the Autism Teacher. ST works on pragmatics at his School. Our SLP also has PLAYGROUND DUTY and USES it ... the one who does social skills.  They do conversations and games in the classroom setting.  I am VERY pleased that one person is focused on this so much of the time.Serge165.  I would say that your social skills have helped you to find me and helped us to become close friends.  I think Sharlet needs to learn social skills for the same reason.  She will most likely want friends and companionship of some kind at some point and social skills will help her to get that.

It's nice to have you here btw and ((((HUGS))))

But they have also been my downfall, my dearest Allegra.  Sharlet will learn them in a less Painful environment then I did...I know that for the truth.  THe old paradime is gone and away

when the dawn comes and all the kingdoms rise to meet the sun, when the darkness bades us pass and the light bades us well, we will roam free in Albari and celebrate because, the Pink-haired girl died for freedom and Neurodiversity
