I find it important to let your doctor know that you want early intervention eval because our Dr. would continue to push the issue off saying he'll catch up. Sometimes, for whatever reason, Dr.'s won't take your instincts seriously. Evals are free and you do need a physical form filled out by the dr. so just demand it. We waited until my son was 2.5 until the dr. "beleived" that there was something more going on.

Ditto all the above posters:) You will feel much better..he has some great skills and some subtle things that are concerning either way he is young and there is so much more information now about autism spectrum. disorder...come here and keep us posted:)
Okay, my son is 11.5 months old...he seems like a happy enough baby but there are a few things that are concerning to me...we have our 1 year appt next month and I just want to know what you think would be significant based on your experiences with your children...
Doesn't really point, maybe reaches instead only rarely
Doesn't really respond to his name unless called multiple times but does respond to voices
Has only waved once
Doesn't mimic (except maybe tonight with clapping)
Will play by himself for long periods of time but really wants me in the room with him but doesn't really look at me
Eye contact while holding him is poor...if you are next to the person holding him it is better but still not great
Babbles up a storm but no words yet (not too concerning at his age I know)
He DOES respond to 'no' (most of the time)
He holds out his hand to 'share' food sometimes (is this a good sign?)
Loves chase games
Loves the animals laughs and chases them
Is fascinated by water
Loves to watch children but I'm not sure he really plays with them...he may just be looking at what they are playing with
Has played peek-a-boo only twice but loves to wait for us to play it with him (he will make eye contact for this)
shakes his head like saying 'no' a lot
What do you think? I just want to be on top of this as much as possible....I really appreciate this board and enjoy all the story sharing and support...thanks in advance
I agree I would contact EI. There are a few things that worry me a bit. It is early to tell. It can't hurt to have him evaulated by EI.
The following are important signs of developmental delays at age 12 months:
Keep monitoring your child's development and ask to schedule an extra appointment so it doesn't go too long between well-child check-ups. You can also contact Early Intervention in your state if your concerns persist.
The best developmental milestone checklists I've found are at the Center for Disease Control's website and are published by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Here's the link to the 1 year old checklist:

Good luck with everything.
Call your school district and ask for the Early Intervention contact. Have your baby evaluated through EI. If there are develomental issues, those will surface and your child can get intervention now. Some states use the Health Dept. to administer EI, some states use the Ed. Dept. But the local school should be able to give you this info for your state.
