I hid the keys..... I thought | Autism PDD

This evening I was in the kitchen and I heard my 14 yr. old yell, "OMG, Mom - I think Cammi has started the car!!"  Both of us started sprinting to the garage and sure enough - there she was behind the wheel - looking like she was going to take off any second.  aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

She loves playing in the garage lately but I ALWAYS hide the keys from her because I was afraid she might try that some day.  I keep the keys high up on a shelf and have no idea how she knew where they were or how she got to them.  It's so scary wondering what she's going to get into next.  Guess we'll never be bored   lol.....

How Scary! - I'm glad you caught her in time and that she's o.k.

OMGosh!  That is really scary. It may be time to invest in a lockbox and wear the key on a chain around your neck.  You could lock up stuff you don't want Cammi to get into.  Wow.... can you put a chain lock on the door to the garage to keep her out of there?  Every door to the outside in our house has a chain lock on it.  So far, even with the assistance of a chair, Adam has not been able to reach them to get them open.  I hope you figure out a way to nip this in the bud.  Good Luck!OMG!

Time to get a lock box with a secret code. And an alarm on all your doors.

I'm glad she's okay.

BTW, she's SO CUTE!wow that would have been scary. when my son was younger we were parked at the gas station and i was gassing up and my son actually got out of his car seat and put the car in gear. Thank god i wasnt in paying for the gas. scared the beegeebees out of me from then on we took more precautions with him.

Thanks, MamaKat and others!

We have the chain locks too but I have been letting her play in the garage - lots of old toys stored out there she loves to get into (and drag them back in   lol ).  There's chimes on every door when they're opened so I can hear if she goes outside.  Box that locks up is a great idea - thanks.  She just continues to surprise me and do things I really didn't know she could do.  I had NO IDEA she could even put a key into an ignition........

I have recently ordered one of the locator bracelets that will alarm when she gets a certain distance away.  She has been known to try to "escape" in the past - actually ran down the road a couple of years ago

We had an in-ground pool put in last year and this year I bought one of the sensors that alarms if anything hits the water.  We're still iffy about letting her swim without floaties so I'm still scared to death that she will get out and get in the pool....  always so much to worry about.

I think school starting and me going back to work is much less stressful than being home with her worrying and chasing her all the time.

She doesn't get up at night very much anymore and I always worry about a house fire so I hate leaving those chain-locks on at night.  We live in a 3-story house - a little girl on each floor - Mom & Dad on 2nd floor - so I worry about that so I take the chain-locks off at night - that way no one can get stuck in if a fire DID start, God forbid.

I AM a worrier - but only when it comes to my girls.

WOW, that is so scary...glad it turned out ok this time...let's hope there isn't a next time!  The lock box seems like your best bet!  Good luck!
