hello
to start these boards have been a welcome outlet for me,thanks.my son eating habits are a ongoing battle for us.its imposible to get him to put anything in his mouth that he dose not want to.brushing his teeth takes 1/2 hour just to do it baddly.i worry about his vitamin levels . i use transdermal creams where i can but how well they work is in question.we just moved to a new city for a autism school and are in our first year as a broken family, just him and I . when things settle down at his new school my plan is to limit the food at home to just ones that will help ballance his diet.Im not looking forward to that battle of wills I can tell you !I know this is a issue for many kids not just autistic children .I hate to add more to the plate of challanges we face but its one that is necessary.he is very strong for a 10 year old and its impossible to get him to take any type of pill even when sick,I still use infant tylonal. Its out dated but im going to use the same idea my parents had,"he will eat it if he is hungry enough". any other ideas ? what diet related issues have any of you faced with your kids ? any success stories ? thanks ,joeys dad

My little girl eats well so can't help with that.

But I do give her a lot of her supplements in liquid form, which can be added to her juice. I also add some to her banana smoothies. They are usually fruit flavored so she doesn;t know they are there.

THANKS EVERYONE
YEA IM NOT HOW SURE I WILL DO AS I GIVE IN IF JOEY STOPS EATING,SO FAR IM GOING SLOW AND HE EATS JUST HIS USUAL FOODS,NO RAW FOODS , VEGGIES OR FRUITS.IVE GOT SOME VITAMIN LOTIONS AND PLAN ON HAVING HIS BLOOD CHECKED AND SEE WHAT HIS VITAMIN LEVELS ARE.IM GOING TO BOY A BLENDER AND TRY THE SMOOTHIE IDEA AND SEE HOW THAT GOES.
 THANKS AGAIN

Hi Michael

you can get a reasonable idea of what is in the food he eats by going here

or here

you can learn more about vitamins / minerals & nutrition in general here

or more technical

you can learn lots of human biology here

or the slightly out-of-date Gray's anatomy

I can highly recommend whey protein as a good source of protein
http://www.1whey2health.com/index.htm
and we use home-made chocolates to hide a lot of vitamins in
just use cooking chocolate and we add crushed tablets, empty capsules etc
and pour into ice-cube trays and freeze to set
my partner makes about 2 weeks worth at a time

Another useful tool in this area, even if you don't follow the B12 protocol
is to download the computer program from here

Here's my list of resources for Pickiness and eating difficulties.

Here's a subject on our forum with lots of tips for giving medicine:

And here's an article from a sensory perspective called "Swallowing Pills:  Helping the Medicine Go Down."

http://www.sensoryprocessingdisorders.com/help-for-swallowin g-pills.htm

Good luck with everything!

my guys don't do so well with regular "chalky" tasting vitamins. They LOVE the gummy varieties though. Taste much like regular gummy bear candies, but with all the vitamins! Yea! Also, they come in many favorites like Spiderman and Pixar Cars and such.

My Paul (Asperger kid) is very sensory aware where food is concerned and he even asks for more of these vitamins. Thank goodness, cause his nutrition ain't exactly a model diet!

good luck,

My son won't consume fruits or veggies so I have to hide it in foods.  I make pumpkin zuccini pancakes, pumpkin cookies, I chop up parshnips and the center dense part of a zuccini to resemble the rice I use for Fried rice, banana bread, etc.  Pizzas have fruit.  You can also make broth from scratch by using chicken or beef bones and boil root veggies and dark green veggies so the vitamins and minerals can be in the broth.  THen we mix the broth w/ rice or noodles and meat.

Add liquid supplements to juices is a great idea. Oils can be rubbed at bottom of feet. Lot's of kids are picky eaters. Try this juice.vegs/fruits in a juicer all together. The sweet taste overrides the vegs. Try juice plus supplements. The old way of they will eat when they are hungry doesn't always work for our kids.  My son will literally starve to death rather than eat something he doesn't want.  Try and hide things in foods he likes and try liquid vitamins in smoothies or yogurt if he will eat those.

In my experience, 2 kids with feeding issues, they won't eat if they are hungry, the signals aren't there, also, they won't drink either. Maybe the school you are going to can help. We are looking into something new called food chaining but haven't started yet.

Also, I did manage to make homemade yogurt and mix in Carnation instant breakfast. It worked for a few weeks.

All I have to say is that it's amazing at what you can pack into a fruit smoothie. ;)

Also, any time your son has to take meds (especially prescrition medications) look for a pharmacist who will put it in a liquid form. My son takes one daily med and at a regular pharmacy you can only get it in a pill form but we went to a private pharmacist who makes them as flavoured liquids.

I know lots of kids who hate veggies. 1 of these kids does juice plus supplements. Great ideas here! Our kids love food! How about the v8 drinks I know a asd kid who does those. All the types. thanks for juice info.we are trying lots of new things for joe as he becomes use to his new school.he is uncomfortable with change especialy with his diet.but due to our finanical situation and lack of transportation he is left with little choice but to try new things he usually would'nt otherwise.he is learning to not waste the foods he likes, but not really liking new stuff.he is making lots of progress at his new school ,f a c e .i am trying to reinforce the things at home he is doing well with at school.he is eating vanilla yogurt at home and i hope to buy a blender to make fruit smoothies.they are little steps but its all good if you make it,for us any how.best wishes to all.
