I don't really know the answer to which method is preferred for what type of client. I do feel the VB was a better choice for my son. Yes, it is language based, but they address so much more. Our consultant uses the ABLLS to track progress. And, I think many VB programs do use this tool. You could read up on that to see what areas they address.
Hi,
Does anybody know when is it preferred to apply Lovaas approach to ABA instead of VB and vise versa? Is there any study to compare the 2 approaches? And if VB is mainly for language?
Thanks
Daddy

Just wanted to say how happy I am that your boys are responding so well to ABA... it is a miraculas seeing all the skills and gifts come out along with language to boot!:)
Enjoy!
I'm not sure the answer to your question, my understanding is that ABA is mainly for behaviors and VB is mainly for communication, but they are the same approach and go together. We have a BCBA that actually does all the therapy that came highly recommended, he does both, ABA and VBA. I think it depends on the need. The boys behavioral issues are very closely related to their communication and speech delay. Andrew has some severe articulation issues and Nikolas' is more in the communicating area, he knows tons of words but doesn't use them to actually communicate, just label. We have been going to private speech/OT since the begining of summer. The speech path there is very much against ABA, says she spends alot of time undoing ABA damage, so I was skeptical. But thanks to Shelley I pursued it anyway and I could not be happier. Maybe it depends on how good and knowledgeable your therapists is, but to be honest in the actual working with kids part his method of interacting with them looks alot like floortime. He does use chocolate and stickers to get them to stick around and to reinforce, but he also uses a lot of praise, and he is playing with them and with things they like to do anyway. Its only been two weeks, but I have already seen improvement in communication, Nikolas is actually asking for things even though he is so soft spoken like he is unsure of himself, but its an incredible change to me and I can understand Andrew a little bit better, and with improvement in communication has come behavioral improvement. I took them to the store the other day and bought each one a movie, then we had a slice of pizza and a drink. I have never ever seen them so good. No one looked at us once. That never happens, there is normally at least one incident that causes people to turn and stare even if for a moment, nothing. I could have cried. If you hadn't know you never would have thought they were anything but normal little boys.
HONK IF YOU LOVE IVAR LOVAAS!
We did VB/ABA for 3 years...she had <5 words a day and severe articulation and expressive delays..the VB/ABA was so much more effective than any speech therapists in getting her caught up with peers..she was assessed to be at a 8 mos. level when she was 3 years old and now she is age appropriate and mainstreamed with no aide for the first grade..completed kindergarten last year with no supports too:)
