they qualify based on parents income. And the income doesn't have to be that low.

Our state automatically puts the child on medicaid if they qualify for SSI. But you can qualify for medicaid without qualifying for SSI.

I applied for SSI for Skylar in Jan. 2007 and was approved in March 2007. So yes, you can get SSI (but like said by BonBon) it is based on financial need/parents income and if approved, they automatically get Medicaid.

The process of applying for SSI is a royal pain the butt, but if you are qualified they will tell you up front (most times), then it has to go through the Determination phase, and they will send you a letter letting you know if you were approved or denied.

Good luck!
Thank u to all of u!
You automatically get medicaid with ssi.  you can go online to socialsecurtiy.gov and start the process. You can use your insurance as primary and then the medicaid will pick up the balance.
You
atCan you guys explain a little to me about how you were able to get SSI.  We applied but were denied because both my husband and my self work full time.  They told us that if we quit our jobs then we would qualify.  Was not happy to here this.  I know we are on the waiting list again for help from SSI but have not heard anything in four years.
We get nothing and can't. They will tell my husband drive a dumpy vehicle. He can't his job is 1 hr.away from our home. We have to live here or it's welfare life all the way. We can't afford anything but the countrey cause of his lack of income.
Have you actually applied for SSI? The reason I ask is because our car, while not new, does exceed the ,000 dollar limit for couples. Since the car is used only for transportation to and from work, taking the kids to school, grocery shopping, etc, in other words, it's not a recreational vehicle, it doesn't count as a resource. At least this what our caseworker told us.

When I applied, I honestly didn't think we'd get anything for my son. All I was hoping for was the diability label, because my son could then get Medicaid because the gross income limits are higher for households with a disabled person. Unlike most of the people on here, I live in Indiana which is one of the few states that doesn't give automatic Medicaid to SSI recepients. For our son to get Medicaid we had to meet the income requirements and without the disability label our income was too high. The price of our insurance premiums was so ridiculously high (bordering on 0 a WEEK!!!!!!

So, even though our son doesn't get much monthly, (4), it's been a huge help because of the Medicaid.

We  have been denied. My husband takes home less than 3,000 a month. To high of income for a home of 4 people. We were even denied help when Dad wasn't here. Our ins. stinks cause their is 9,000 a year family deductable with major things even tests. I was turned down also. The reason being there are treatments for both of us but yet we can't pay the deductables on medical bills even. Dad's income is way less than our monthly  out put.

i get ssi become we are a low incom family. my husband gets ssdi and its not enough to even pay a rent here in new york or bills. i just started working this week ,so we'll see what happens as soon i report it.

We get nothing and can't. They will tell my husband drive a dumpy vehicle. He can't his job is 1 hr.away from our home. We have to live here or it's welfare life all the way. We can't afford anything but the countrey cause of his lack of income.

Actually, you can recieve both earned and unearned income and still get SSI benefits for your child.

Not too long ago, my husband was getting unemployment benefits (unearned income) and I was working part time (earned income). The formula used to figure his benefits was different than the formula used for just earned income or  just unearned income. The way it's figured is weird though. Our gross income at the time was 00 a month, my part-time and his unemployment. When it was just my husband working, our gross monthly income was ,322. My son's benefits actually went down with the 00 because of the way it's figured.  It's kind of screwy.

Here's the basic formula used for determining our son's benefits based solely upon earned income.

Hubby's wages  (,322)  minus living allowance for ineligible children (1) (we only have two children, but I believe it's 1 for EACH ineligible child, but don't quote me on that) ,322 - 1 = ,011. SSI doesn't count of the ,011, so, ,011 - = 91. SSI doesn't count of the 91, so, 91 - = 26. SSI doesn't count half of the 26, so half of  26 = 63. SSI includes a living allowance for two parents of 4. 63 - 4 = 9 (This is the amount of our income that SSI counts) SSI doesn't count of the  income, so, 9 - = 9 (This is our total countable income) The most money you can get through SSI is 3. You now take the max from SSI (3) - the total countable income (9, in our case) 3 - 9 = 4. 4 is the amount our son gets when our total earned income grosses ,322.

As, for the medicaid, I'm still waiting to hear back on that. I live in Indiana where SSI doesn't mean automatic approval for medicaid. I filed at the welfare office almost a month ago and still no news. I should have applied a while back, but kept putting it off since we had insurance through my husband.

Autistic children do get SSI--at least my son does.  If you are going to apply, check out this website http://www.ssa.gov/applyfordisability/child.htm

It gives information and lets you enter alot of the information they need to approve you.

Brendon receives SSI and medicaid. Is it possible to receive SSI benefits for our kids? In my state...if you're approved for SSI you automaticaly get medicaid.

If they can use the extra income the medicaid will probably be helpful too...it will cover the copays and deductibles that they would otherwise be paying out of pocket.  IMHO-we have a lot of other expenses that some NT kids don't have..so even if your nephew gets the flu and needs meds having that medicaid to pay for the meds or dr visit is only going to give them more money to use for other things.

But to answer your original post--I'm not sure if all autistic children qualify for SSI benefits or not.

Do they have to have medicaid also? Only because my bro inlaw has medical insurance thru his job and it will not be needed. Some other child who can use it have it?my son has been getting SSi and the state has given us a mental health insurance. Let me tell you he was in the hospital for 42 days and the part that my other insurance would not pay was over 170,000. it was nice to have the other insurance to help pay for that. this was just for an mental health med wash and reeval. I know it can get costly. wait till you have to put them in long term . you will be happy to have the two insurances. stevens momIn Indiana the federal and state are seperate. You have to go through the whole process twice if you want both. Indiana is only one of three states that do this.

How do you apply for Medicaid without SSI?  We wouldn't qualify for SSI, but could definatley use the Medicaid for expenses that aren't covered by our health insurance.

Thanks in advance,

Tiffany

Check out applying for MA through the TEFRA option...that is what we did.  We didn't even get SSI until after we had MA in place.  I would call your social worker.  If you don't have one- then I would call your County's developmental delays intake.  If you need help looking up phone numbers--please pm me.

my son gets 646 ,we live in new york.

my husband gets ssdi 629 and i will start working part time this week.

my son gets ssi and my husband ssdi because he became disabled recently. i will start working thi smonth and i was wondering whats the limit of income we can have and still not lose my son's ssi. because its great help!As I remember reading, you cannot have a child get SSI if the parents have both earned and unearned income.. So once you start working (earned income) either your husband has to get off SSDI (unearned income) or you lose your son's SSI. The only reason I know of this is because I have been looking at getting on SSI myself for my anxiety.

I'm sad to say we went through all the trouble to get D SSI two months ago, and at the end of this month are probably going to lose it because my husband will be getting a raise. While the raise sounds great, it isn't when you have also just had your insurance rates increase. Basically, the raise is going to all go to the increase in our insurance. I seriously wish SSI went by net income, not gross.
